Well, I might have read the license wrong. If I read again now, I understand it is partially open, quote from their website:

There are 2 important things: OsmAnd uses third-party code only with permissive licenses like (LGPL, MIT, Apache) and OsmAnd code itself copyrighted by OsmAnd BV is distributed under GPLv2 license with the exception of distributing it on Google Play markets without permission. That provides a possibility to build any application for personal usage or build an opensource application under GPLv2 license (cause OsmAnd is not a platform and all the code built on top of the core must also be licensed as GPL).

"Oi, mate! Duh you have a loicence?" - Unfortunately, no official, licenced data on hand. But a great project, indeed! Thanks for the info. Will keep it in mind for the future.

You are correct and incorrect at the same time. It's a nerdy joke. Please see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_ite_domum

Interesting read, too. Thanks! To bad we have to fight about "who came first", which becomes a "chicken or egg" question in my humble opinion. Instead of just living together and share the space. Like we do in most parts of the world.

;-) Or maybe we have to "give back" the area to the Greek (sea) folks?! But there is always the problem about where to move all the people to ...

Oh, ok. Sounds bad, sorry for you! - I am not using OneDrive. Neither paid or unpaid.

Right, I am totally aware of that historical bias. Thanks for the reminder anyway!

And I agree with most of your description. - Just making it clear: I am especially not basing my point of view on "the Bible stuff", but the broader historical information. So, the basic knowledge which is generally accepted by historians holds for me. Hence the reference on Wikipedia. (It's science. You trust the facts. And the cross-checked information. Until proven otherwise by new discovery.) About the details we can (and have to) discuss.

PS: Your image link is not working.

Sorry, can't answer this. - But I never use Google Maps or any self-hosted solution, just "OsmAnd" (https://osmand.net/) on my mobile for about a decade. It gives all I need for navigation, thought it's not FOSS.

Well, I am also a "newbie" for OSM. But for building outline mapping it's done on OSM editors, not with the StreetComplete app. So not sure if this can be automated. Most work is done manually, I believe. If you check out https://osmlab.github.io/show-me-the-way/ you will see how people are mapping their neighbourhood manually, too! - Yes, such a crazy community this is!

Intrigued by your newer posts, I had to see what your parents said earlier. - Wow, this definitely sound like a hard conspiracy theory! Difficult to believe.

But I want to mention, that if you look up different news outlets (even from Israel itself), that is has been established for months now: The Israeli intelligence/military and a bit later Netanyahu had some knowledge about the upcoming attack.

This is still being investigated. And sure, many details are hard to trust and the actions very doubthful. - I am unsure, if this will ever be cleared to the full extend. Unfortunately.

Well, as far as my history knowledge goes, the term "Palestine" for the region was introduced by the Romans. I thought, that was more well known? - Here, quoting from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine_(region)):

Roman authorities renamed the province of Judaea to "Syria Palaestina" in c. 135 CE to punish Jews for the Bar Kokhba Revolt and permanently sever ties between Jews and the province.

Ah, right. The article also states that the term has been used by the greek Herodotus in the 5th century BCE. So it was probably known and used some time before the Roman conquest of the area, I suppose?

So I guess, the statement from your parents seems mostly right. Maybe just framed bad. Unclear why this is a Zionist take, if it's just the documented history.

Unexpected Monthy Python reference. Nice.

Really? What apps in particular? Asking, because I have not come across "extra payment for unrequested AI" yet.

We've all already talked about switching away from google/apple maps to something like openstreetmaps, mapy, tomtom amigo, etc. But all of these services use openstreetmaps (UK non-profit) as a source and they still miss a lot of local data even for bigger cities!

If you have some spare time, think about adding a bit of data to the map with your local knowledge. There's a lot of business data missing that is on google maps like websites, phone numbers and opening hours but also stuff like parking lots and whether they're publicly accessible and free or not. Adding these makes the competition of ALL services using OSM as a source better.

I also use the mobile app https://streetcomplete.app/ and https://every-door.app/ to add data while on my walks, these make my walks more engaging and I actually take longer ones + see new places because of it. Streetcomplete also has a focus on important and easy to collect data with their default filters, and you can choose what you want to contribute.

If you really want to get into the thick of it and contribute more than just simple data you can always check out https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/How_to_contribute and see in which of the many ways you can contribute!

Hello, dear "Lemmings" (correct address?)

As a quite new user to the Lemmy universe and the Fediverse concept, I have a basic question, which I could not get answered elsewhere: If an instance (= a community / topic group, e. g. "memes","World news" or "MapPorn" in the example picture) is moving from one server to another (= the name and/or ending changes), how to properly follow the move? And what happens to the "old" instances, that are discontinued? Should I keep them following?

Best regards
