I've pretty much gone back to my 2000s era mindset of "I don't need a smart phone when I have PCs in front of me at work and at home."

But really it's more like I already have an old smart phone but hate using it and never want to have to upgrade. We'll see what Motorola can make happen.

Trapped Americans getting whoopsie-killed as shit all over the place gets blown up? That sounds like a great justification for throwing more money and lives at attacking the Epstein Files-- I mean, Iran.

Honestly I would be more surprised if it were simply a gutted and incompetent goverment, rather than intentional.

I have the opposite reaction when I see these memes. To me it's a reminder of how inclusive some of my favorite nerdy communities are, on top of being a fun little in-joke like any meme should be. And I'm an old beardy middle aged dad too for whatever that's worth.

However, that doesn't mean the image itself is innocent or appropriate for most audiences. I'm not going to be asking the family's opinion on this one, lol. But I don't see it as a manga fetish thing at all. More empowerment than exploitation for the owners of the legs shown.

So you're telling me that if we make the world hate us, they might send us less money?

The last panel reminded me of almost 20 years ago when the HPV vaccine first came available. Here in the US I remember the conservative backlash over it.

It wasn't the same as today where conservatives reject the COVID vaccine because that's how they prove to themselves that their freedom and bodily autonomy are intact or some shit. It was much more along the lines of how they like to see people suffer as long as they can tell themselves it was justified.

So it was basically "my daughter isn't getting it because she doesn't need it and isn't a slut," and of course they meant it in the way that anybody who IS a slut deserves to be punished with cervical cancer. Back then they didn't always say the quiet part out loud.

“Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Every time I scroll past this image, that’s the line that gets me. Bold threatening declaration by fascist dictator, then ends like a work email reminding you not to leave food in the cafeteria fridge over the weekend.

I had flood insurance for a long time, in a non-flood zone. It was cheap and it made sense since storm water sometimes runs across my back yard.

Until one day I thought we got close to needing to use it. I spoke to somebody at the insurance company and got to know my policy on my own a bit.

It doesn’t matter how bad my house might flood. A flood claim would not matter unless either a 2 acre area flooded or a neighbor’s house had a nice flood claim too.

Lot of fucking good that does for somebody with a small yard who lives on a hill! I actually got rid of the policy years ago.

I typically stay at work until 5pm because I make no effort to come in early and I take long lunch breaks.

This place is an absolute ghost town by 5, and it makes me happy to see that. It seems people mostly have their heads on straight here.

Off the top of my head, these are the kinds of things my conservative family members or distant acquaintances would say and agree with:

What if somebody else gets more than me?

What if somebody who doesn’t “deserve” benefits gets them?

Why should I give a shit or have to pay for other people? (Unaware of how insurance itself works)

The economyyyyy!

It shows how stupid and against your own best interests this kind of thinking can be.

I am the full time worker in my family, and happy to be the provider for them. However, I would be a stay at home dad / house-husband so damn fast if my wife got some random job mom making a lot more than me. I do have my priorities in order, after all.

American here, and I am totally OK with a tiny bit of extra latency if people & companies want to move their servers to some place in Europe that actually respects freedom and people.

Though I suspect that if you’re a US company with servers located abroad, they will still make the law apply to you since you control it.
