If I understand correctly the biggest issue for FFMPEG and other projects is not only the Google and Microsoft that use them without giving back, but their chosen License. They gave permission to corporations to do this. One of the potential ways to fix this situation, is to change the license. For example from LGPL to AGPL. And then they can sell the legalese package of allowing them to break their license. The biggest difficulty is that, as a project, they'd need consent from every past and future contributors. So, yeah. I get it. This is a mess.

Not one mention to moderation. The strength and focus of our "small isles" is on taking control of moderating the contents. We can stop fascists posts, and we can share alternative narratives (e.g. solarpunk) to Sillicon Valley. Plus, spoiler alerts as content warnings, etc. I think mastodon with their covenant is the greatest example of this ethos.

For those panicking, here are some key things to look for, based on the writeup:

• A very recent version of liblzma5 - 5.6.0 or 5.6.1. This was added in the last month or so. If you're not on a rolling release distro, your version is probably older.

• A debian or RPM based distro of Linux on x86_64. In an apparent attempt to make reverse engineering harder, it does not seem to apply when built outside of deb or rpm packaging. It is also specific to Linux.

• Running OpenSSH sshd from systemd. OpenSSH as patched by some distros only pulls in libsystemd for logging functionality, which pulls in the compromised liblzma5.

Debian testing already has a version called '5.6.1+really5.4.5-1' that is really an older version 5.4, repackaged with a newer version to convince apt that it is in fact an upgrade.

It is possible there are other flaws or backdoors in liblzma5, though.

This post title is misleading. The developer was working with Snap until Canonical didn't allowed it anymore. He's pissed with the policy enforcement which is strictly speaking commercial and as bad as Apple's afaik...

There's a running candidate that said that, but that's the same candidate that said so many crazy shit and lies. So, you can take it with a grain of salt. Even if that candidate won the upcoming elections, I hope that dissolving Argentina's central bank is not going to happen because of many reasons, but also because the country has a parliament... As others just said, take the challenge of repairing or correctly identify what's broken. It should be fun, and part of the diy ethos.

Depends very much on your scope. Heck, there's even aesthetics. Do you prefer AMD or Intel? Don't you feel like having an ARM and take the challenge of compatible images? Would you need to check the transcoding compatibility for Jellyfin? Are you going fangless? Is one 2.5gpbs eth port enough? Etc.

That said, check the reviews from https://www.servethehome.com/ they have articles with benchmarks and videos for all the latest nucs and other hardware's form factor servers.

Be aware that Intel discontinued the NUCs iirc.. but Asus or some vendor might have picked up to grab that market segment.
