How about using labels in etc-fstab ? That should be all you really need to be able to refer to disks in a cohesive fashion between nodes.

Try btrfs for root partition, add snapper and you're pretty much done. Not that it will be inmutable, but you can rollback updates. Check btrfs awesome list on github (for the many other tools) and documentation..

Well, on Reddit any party can pay the API prices that are needed to scrape data. So, the paywall. I guess it's some measure... But if you are being tracked by such an actor, your threat model can't really include reddit... It's defeating the purpose. All this is discussion on air.

Tbh, I was just trying to point out that being grateful is possible. In the same way that you return a smile, or give some money when buying goods or services in a context of a solidarity event. For example the other day people were selling hotdogs for "pay what you want" whole raising money for refugee kids. That's how I approach this, copying/ piracy is "pay what you want" (to creators, not platforms). They made some effort to create it, yes. You are not taking anything from them. Nonetheless, you can express economically your gratitude for what they did. Like, homage to celebs.

Shelter is an app that enables a feature (work profile) on the underlying OS. Surely, Android Go has removed that (among many other features), since that's their essential concept..

This instance could definitely have a QA community. If they want, instead of enforcing the rule, simply state "bug reports should go here and there, questions and answers are run by users themselves in the respective community". Then, everyone would be happy.

Oh, and the syncthing encryption that you may enable for the folders is for these devices/ clients. This may be useful is you were to use a third part machine, like a VPS, as a 24/ 7 node for your files. That's different from a relay, may be desirable if you want to sync ASAP and avoid conflicts. In any case, conflicts are rare.. you would need to open the DB and add entries at the same time, or some quirky scenario...

Syncthing is p2p. The servers only see your devices IP addresses and let them connect to share data themselves. That's why it's a relay. But AFAIK files only goes from, and to, your syncthing clients; without passing through the relays. At most, the relay may see some metadata as filenames. I have been syncing passwords like this since long ago. Never jumped to Bitwarden because I didn't had the need... May do so anyway because of OTP and Passkeys..

Truenas scale is Debian, if you just use it remotely it may be a good bet. If you may use the server as workstation (e.g. desktop) then you better use Debian itself (or both, as VMs under Proxmox). Managing ZFS is super easy, just create a couple of volumes with small and big blocksize, in either cockpit or whatever web ui. You may also switch OS (e.g. disaster or play around), and recover these effortlessly with zfs import command from CLI. Good luck!
