Not a chemist myself but Gold has lots of industrial applications because it doesn't react to many other atoms or molecules. For example, it doesn't rust at all. Similar thing goes for platinum. Maybe we should buy the latter..

if IM was your need, check snikket.org although I can't remember how well they support OTP encryption... of course it's subjective how many layers one need, I'd be happy with just self-host and TLS, that's how far I'd go for me and my relatives for day-to-day privacy.

Try rsnapshot, it's rsync with hard links. Though, is better to use snapshots on filesystem (be it zfs, btrfs, or another one with such a feature... Might be CoW is required, never thought much about it ..)
