sometimes youtube believes I'm a bot and won't allow downloading stuff from them with yt-dlp 2026.07.04 on debian 13.6.

I could torify the whole computer, so next time I open a terminal and execute yt-dlp it uses tor by default. Sadly, I don't know how to do that.

Another way would be to torify only yt-dlp, but neither do I know how to do that.

Changing the mac address and hostname did nothing.

Can you help?

newest / best format would be AV1, but my computer doesn't support it completely. VP9 is completely supported.

the command I've been using: yt-dlp -f bv*[ext=mp4]+ba[ext=m4a]/b[ext=mp4] -S height:1080 --all-subs --no-warnings -v https://www.youtube.com/watchx

this command downloads the best available video up to 1080p, but if the best video format available is AV1, it will download it. I need a command that downloads the best video but up to VP9.

Help appreciated.

I also installed deno on the terminal with curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh

however, nothing happens if I execute yt-dlp, like: yt-dlp --all-subs --no-warnings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bhuN9nqEb4 returns nothing.

All my terminal shows after executing a command like the one pasted I get:

I don't use apps like whatsapp or skype because they sell my data and don't trust them.

I was hoping for a foss alternative to talk to my parents, regular folk who need something easy to set up on their android devices, ideally through fdroid.

I don't want to reveal a real phone number because I don't want ads from nobody.

I don't need to see my parent's faces, I just need to talk to them and maybe send files and lines of text.

I'm wondering is this a regular occurrence meaning google changed something in the code again which renders this application useless and I just have to wait till the yt-dlp developers release an update and it works again or if it's something more serious.

error reads: ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden

I also changed the MAC and username to get the same error message. Now I'm thinking about proxifying my computer, so each time I use yt-dlp it runs through tor, but I have no idea how to do it.

I don't think I'm going to use it much: I enjoyed using it to torrent files and to ask about censorship circumvention, things I now have alternatives to.

SOLUTION: add Flathub as a user remote too:

flatpak lets you install applications as user vs system. I want to install as user because my .var is full.

example: flatpak install --user org.fcitx.Fcitx5 returns error: No remote refs found for ‘org.fcitx.Fcitx5’
