Small Site Outage (programming.dev)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Ategon@programming.dev to c/meta@programming.dev

Hey everyone! Recently there was a small issue with the backend (docker shenanigans) that brought the site down and then took a bit to fix

Things should be fixed for now and we will be looking more at it in the future to try to prevent the site from being taken down that way again

Downtime was around 30 minutes

The best place to reach us when theres an outage with the site and to receive updates of it is on the discord server or matrix space or on one of our microblog accounts

Lemmyvision Song Contest (stacks.programming.dev)

Hey everyone! I wanted to do a post here talking about an event going on in the fediverse called Lemmyvision. This is a competition where various communities each choose a song and then those are voted on by users to rank which ones people enjoy the most.

Its being ran as a fun way to see various kinds of music from around the world, sharing more between our online communities across Lemmy, and as a way to songs from lesser known artists. We are participating with game soundtracks as an opportunity to showcase new advancements in the game development space, especially for indie games that might otherwise not get much exposure.

There was a national final to determine the song our instance would submit in the programming.dev event community. After voting the song Your Inception from the game Casette Beasts was chosen.

Submitted Songs and Voting

Ive compiled all of the songs into playlists on three different platforms for watching

Feel free to listen to them and vote using the voting link https://tally.so/r/nWNgKQ. When selecting what instance you are representing theres an option to select programming.dev for people voting from the instance.

Voting is done by ranking the songs from your favorite to your least favorite. Users from our instance can't rank the song we submitted to keep things fair.

If you want to chat with other people about the competition theres a community for it here

Future Events

This post will be going into the meta community for people who might not know the event community exists (and i'll likely be doing another post when the event Canvas is happening).

Any other future posts will be posted in the programming.dev event community. All major event posts will be made on our blog with the category set to the event name and the tag "Event".

Hey everyone! Ive made a form that can be used to give feedback about the site including what you think its doing well and what you think needs improvement

Based on responses if something is highly requested we can prioritize improving/adding that first

Ill try to run these a couple times a year

Will be pinned for a day in the instance

Theres been some weekly posts in some communities for people to share updates (weekly thread in !rust@programming.dev and screenshot saturday in !gamedev@programming.dev ) so figured would try to run a generalized version in the main programming community!

If youve worked on something this week feel free to share it below. If you have a project to show off in general we also have the !showoff@programming.dev community in the instance that you can post in

Its based on what instances report. So instances on 0.19 or above would factor in votes into that number. Ones that arent would not (so the number has a combination of both cases)

[-] Ategon@programming.dev 11 points 2 years ago

mod here, its not a bot. Just a user who doesnt like to comment

[-] Ategon@programming.dev 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It depends on what is being called activity

The standard (I say standard but its really just the thing most sites use since it boosts their numbers) that social media uses for monthly active users is to do people who have logged in. This is what mastodon uses as well

While they aren't actively contributing content they are still actively using the site (active account as opposed to dead account)

I think lemmy should match up to the mastodon and other social media calculations so these comparisons actually make sense otherwise were just making lemmy feel dead by calling a different calculation MAU than what people are used to and since both calculations are being compared like they're equal

For communities yes due to cross instance stats but for instances themselves (which the stats above is based on) no. You can just use post read times in addition to the three which will catch anyone who has read a post. Post reads are something each instance has access to for its users so it can do the unread comments feature but it doesn't federate (but each instance self reports stats on itself).

[-] Ategon@programming.dev 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

yep, you can do them anytime after theyre unlocked and you dont have to do all of them

The testing instances were all blocked so that test posts didnt start populating the feeds

the voyager instance also has no relation to the voyager app, its not a staging area for it

if theres demand for a testing area we can make a testing community here and hide it from the feeds by default

[-] Ategon@programming.dev 10 points 2 years ago

For your edit, this is a collector community for gamedev news so its valid in both. Feel free to crosspost it over if you want

[-] Ategon@programming.dev 10 points 3 years ago* (last edited 3 years ago)

The C# version of the project is separate from the main one. It is possible to entirely code a game in c++ though in the main one (you can use both c++ and gdscript in it in one game interchangeably). Gdscript is a really easy language to learn though and is similar to other scripting languages (the only things you really need to learn is some keywords godot added to make coding in it easier when using things in the engine. Stuff like node names etc you would have to learn regardless of the language you're using)

Heres an explanation I did on the old post https://programming.dev/comment/1029515

Looks like an issue where it isnt loading the css properly. This is an issue that happens sometimes in browsers that you can usually fix by refreshing or clearing out the cache. Ive been using and seen some other people using the site fine on mobile browsers so it may be something client side

If more people are experiencing it though or you still cant fix it I can try to see what could be causing it (send what browser you were using + OS)
