For modding in general, baseline is checking and handling reports made by users. In addition to that though there can be looking over posts in the instance to make sure none break the rules (sometimes theres stuff like off topic posts made that arent reported)

This community specifically in addition to the above has the solution threads that would require to be posted when the new puzzle drops while AoC runs throughout december

Daily tasks:

• checking reports once a day or something similar and dealing with them
• while AoC is running at midnight ET post a solution megathread and lock it. When the two numbers for the day at https://adventofcode.com/2023/stats get above 100 unlock it (done to prevent cheating on the global leaderboard, only the first 100 scores count there). Usually takes at most 30 mins to reach 100, was much shorter in the early days of the month

I've been posting a ton of content on various communities (and am the most active poster) but this bot is just to help guide people from things like the programming community to the more specific topic communities to help get those active since c/programming tends to have content that would fit in those and its supposed to be a collector community to filter people towards other communities due to lemmy having bad community discovery out of the instance

I'll be tweaking the triggers and making it fire less based on what I see happening over time

seeing a community from another instance shows the amount of subscribers from that instance. Only the original instance shows the total

so 73 people from programming.dev subbed to this community

The instance finder is built to encourage the use of topic specific instances rather than general use ones so that communities are grouped together better in the same site. The site can then manage all the communities effectively and have the site customized to accomodate them better (and make it feel more like a home for what you like looking at and discussion with others rather than one of many reddit clones)

Categories are mainly so that people are sent to a topic instance that matches their interests. Science goes to mander, programming to p.d, sports to fanaticus, gaming to lemmy.zip, etc.

If youve got some suggestions on how to improve it though let me know, still in progress

Couple things I think would have to be added for this to work. One would be tagging communities based on the content in them so these subscribe lists dont have to be constantly manually updated and instead can be set on a community level. Then would be handling for taking in the category from the url and saving that so its used later when they sign up (I dont think base lemmy would want to integrate behaviour from the pangora site but it could be integrated into instances running pangora)

Weird, yeah you should be seeing it since it looks like youre in the same instance. What are you using to look at lemmy?

edit: it may have something to do with language settings. Make sure you havent unchecked english in your user settings

Yeah optimally all communities would follow the results of the poll but there are some exceptions to account for and at the end of the day the mods should be the ones running the communities, not the admins. There are some communities that want to be the community for that topic across the entire fediverse rather than being the programming.dev version of that community so recognition across instances might not be needed for it

This will likely be one of the only polls I run that affect communities themselves since I want mods to be the ones running the communities while admins just deal with things about the site itself (and its ran just so I can have a default style to create new communities with)

With this vote result the vast majority of communities will be following option 2 with a couple exceptions

Ill be running a poll in the future to gauge if people like how the instance looks after the poll results being in action for a bit in this format

Im currently making a bot for the programming.dev godot community that posts things from rss feeds. Still under construction but I can do a reply here when its done (source will be available on github for self hosting with your own feeds)
