Yeah it sucks. The more people that educate and switch others to open source community-run stuff the better. There is also https://alternativeto.net/, and https://european-alternatives.org/ for helping people find open source projects just have to search online if it is corpo or community-run

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago

Exactly and that's why open source community-run stuff needs to be explained to people so more people switch over. https://alternativeto.net/ and https://european-alternatives.org/ will help a ton for people to find more

I've heard HuggingFace has made a couple open source robots not sure if they are libre fully but they seem interesting. A couple other projects are on YouTube too

The more advanced ones are still not being done as open source though

It jus clicked for me why they call it copilot. Hated it since it was announced and even more now. Everybody should be flying solo

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ironfox does as well

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 13 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Ironfox, Cromite, Librewolf, Ungoogled Chromium, Orion, so many much better options nowadays.

Also the people need to organize way more to get more done especially getting way more people doing too. It all compounds overtime

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Can you make some tutorials for how to?

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Sadly they do. The best way to make money is just be consistent in what you want to do that makes money.

If you want to make the most money too then above a career is having a business. Building a business next to a job/career is possible even though it will be tough

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Many of us have been trying to get people to organize online to do that in real time communities on say Matrix and Stoat to inform, collaborate, strengthen each other, etc but people need to stop scrolling, and do.

The whole country as a matter of fact.

How do we get through to people who want to be entertained?

Plenty of us already are doing but we need way more

[–] atmorous@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

This is what Bluesky does but we should take that idea and do that ourselves as well for not just a Substack decentralized alternative but also for Amazon, and Facebook decentralized alternatives as well

Framasoft is based in France, and since we know how France is currently about GrapheneOS. It is not the best location for PeerTube and other open source projects to be in currently. So a move could be in order or at least decentralizing the development?

Also, not sure if it is just me but does it seem like it is last in how fast it grows, develops, and usage out of all open source social media/platforms?

Thinking and feeling like it would be beneficial for the project to move out of France and switch how it ran similiar to how Mastodon does. Owned and run by the people.

Should the project stay in France? Do you think it is fine how it is ran? In what ways can it improve? Long-term do you think Framasoft even as a non-profit can always be trusted?

Been working on open source as well so I know more people helping out would be beneficial but not fully familiar with PeerTube situation so asking here.

Thoughts?

Thats awesome!!! Would be cool if it could be made to work with Vanillo (not open source sadly) and PeerTube. Would be an awesome thing overall

Here's a series of good read articles:

https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/be-hope-podcasts-global-goals

https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/makeshift-traveler-solar-backpack-for-homeless

Read anything else they wrote about hope on their website/other articles. Their articles are amazing for all kinds of other good news. Same for https://goodnewsnetwork.org/ too

For YouTube channels that offer good news also: Good News, & Sam Bentley

(This post is focused on the actual Network Effect. But of course content, people/content creators moving will help as well among other things)

Main legacy social media apps suck. So let's switch everyone to better.

Here's the solution for the Network Effect. Instead of having everyone switch fully from one to the other just have them have a foot on both sides till everyone switches over eventually.

During that we can also encourage them to get other people on the platform as they use it more

That's basically what Linux is doing via dual booting and with time/usage people will get off them since they enjoy the experience of the better alternative.

Some YouTubers are already hosting their content on multiple platforms. Many art artists already do that too

Also here are many open source alternatives I hope you will all try out/share with others in case you missed them:

Twitter ➡️ Mastodon & Bluesky

Instagram ➡️ Pixelfed, & Flashes

TkTok ➡️ Loops by Pixelfed, & Spark (Spark.so)

Discord ➡️ Matrix, & Stoat

YouTube ➡️ PeerTube

Meta Horizons ➡️ Resonite (On Steam, free)

Twitch ➡️ OwnCast, PeerTube, Glimesh, & Streamplace

Meetup ➡️ Mobilizon

Facebook ➡️ Diaspora

Snapchat ➡️ ???

Pinterest ➡️ ???

Amino ➡️ ???

Hopefully some groups can be formed to get alternatives for latter 3 done too

XMPP havent tried it yet (Think thats how you spell it)

Main legacy social media apps suck. So let's switch everyone to better. I fully get the NoSocialMedia movement but we must remember that it is a thing because legacy social media is horrible.

Also it would be good to contact people internationally. So here are open source alternatives I hope you will try out then help others get on board:

Twitter ➡️ Mastodon

Instagram ➡️ Pixelfed, & Flashes

TkTok ➡️ Loops by Pixelfed, & Spark (Spark.so)

Discord ➡️ Stoat

Snapchat/Whatsapp ➡️ Sup

YouTube ➡️ PeerTube

Meetup ➡️ Mobilizon

Facebook ➡️ ???

Pinterest ➡️ ???

Amino ➡️ ???

Also potential solution for the Network Effect. Instead of having everyone switch fully from one to the other just have them have a foot on both sides till everyone switches over eventually

That's basically what Linux is doing and with time/usage people will get off them since they enjoy the experience of the better alternative. Brining others onto them too since they exist on both sides

(I was asked to move the post here)

Regardless of this shitty news of Senate Democrats caving we must keep going:

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/09/senate-democrats-shutdown-vote-00644146

Also Schumer wanted this to happen! (Thanks TallonMetroid for this source):

https://prospect.org/2025/11/08/why-does-schumer-keep-trying-to-cave-government-shutdown/

🇺🇲 But Don't Panic! Organize.

(Search for that GIF phrase online to understand what I mean if you don't know)

Never forget the Senate Dems caving today. But also dont let it make you any less hopeful or driven to get things done. We still have momentum. We still demolished GOP a couple days ago. We still can switch to real Progressive candidates (Actual Left) instead of Moderates (Center-Right on World Politics stage) that have failed us for decades

So as a fellow American doing and getting others to do together I highly request all of you to do as well!! Collaborate, and get others active across the country!!! There are many of us doing and refusing to back down!! Join up with your cities/towns/states that are nearby you in-person and online

Here are things that can be done (Pick any):

  • Protest!!! Strike!!! (The main goal of a protest is getting people together to make connections so we can get things done together after the protest. Remember every movement is only as strong as people doing and there are many of us that are.)

  • Get other people doing as well (Help them connect them to in-person & online communities because with more of us doing the stronger we collectively are. Organizing, Logistics, & Collaboration is the foundation of any movement. Informing Each Other, Strengthening/Growing Each Other, Learning, Doing Together, etc is the main goal we must all strive for!!)

  • Support Run For Something by sending good people who will actually do the job to be trained as progressive candidates. Also volunteer to help them with their current/future candidates and those in office

Edit: (Remember everyone. Moderate Democrats in USA are Center-Right in World Politics. They might as well be 2 sides of the same coin

If you are a voter who wants real change put in progressives, or indpendents that actually lean left in World politics

Run For Something trains progressive candidates to run and win. Couple days ago they won big for various elections when we had that very good day

They also have on Substack: RFS Feel Good which gives weekly updates about everything they have accomplished in & out of office

Volunteer to help more candidates & current officials to get things done!!)

  • Support Elias Law Group by getting more law people to help them out on cases internationally. Financially support them too since they have been doing overtime for the people

  • Talk to any military/police people so they know they are not alone. So they know that the people care about them and so they don't side with the fascists. If you are directly part of any military branch/police department of those then highly recommend you all have discussions with anyone that is high risk of not being on side of the people with others around.

  • Talk to Mexico/Canada/International Allies part of Government/Regular Citizens from those Other Countries to form Contingency Plans for USA in Case of any Emergencies/Situations to Have in Place. Also so we get any assistance we can get from them: food/medicine/etc. Also to have in place ability to form a Myanmar N.U.G.-like organization as moments notice to manage all USA Military/People/Etc in case things go nuts

  • Get creative: Food, Medicine, Community, Transportation, help people switch to Open Source Software/Apps/Hardware many alternatives on https://alternativeto.net/

  • Show them what FAFO means!!!!!

Hope, Action, Community, & National/International Allies are the most powerful things to have right now. Read this and never lose hope no matter how hard they try to make it seem. Make your own hope in every way and for others! Make yourselves resilient!:

https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/hope-key-in-meaningful-life

https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/hopeful-people-live-better-lives-study

https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/hope-quotes

Also we can become like the Nordic countries & Canada that live well but we must do for what we want!:

https://www.visitdenmark.com/denmark-pavillion/press/why-does-denmark-have-such-high-quality-life

https://denmark.dk/people-and-culture/happiness

Strength in Unity!! Power to the People!!! They try but they will not break our resolve!! Together we are making this country what it should be for us all!! Keep each other safe and show them what a real American is capable of!!! They have gone too far for too long and this is beyond party lines at this point!! Finally, show this post to other people so they too can be hopeful & amped up!! Save it, believe it, & let's move!!

Edit: Based on the article: Facebook has recently gotten an Ex-Meta Member into the Data Protection Agency of Ireland near end of 2024. They were sued for 250 million euro. They are back now actively trying to push for lower data protections in the EU publicly saying "It will hurt Meta"

Edit 2: The link was free when I read it but they changed it to subscribed so not even worth going into the link now. If you have alternative ways to read it then I recommend that. Sorry for not being able to find better sources

Edit: It is a joint open source initiative between Germany, France, Italy, & Netherlands to make Cybersecurity, AI, Cloud, & Social Media Network alternatives

Maybe we can finally get a Facebook open source alternative with mobile apps /s

Spotted this on Mastodon so I decided to inform you all. What you think?

If we really want better we gotta communicate about it to see how it can be done

Wanted to open this conversation because we could really use an Open Source app that partners with websites and stores so they can display any of their products on the app for people to buy

Suggestion: Would be a 10,000 IQ move if say KDE and KDE Community make one since it can be a passive income in a way from making/hosting the app for people to use. The money gained can be used to fund the devs, their KDE/other projects, and other open source projects. Edit: That way it adds onto the already existing sources of funding, and can lead to growth all over

Maybe one app from KDE. One from GNU/Linux. Etc

Technically that's what Amazon is in a way no?

Then for USA partner up with FedEx/USPS (Whichever is better). Spitballing here with all this

Extending the vote to here since well it is Linux. I probably should have posted here first but oh well. Let me know which genre of Tux game you would want made first.

I know other devs interested in making Tux games but before I begin with them I figured I would ask the community what they would like to see

A Conker/Golden Eye type game? DOOM-like? Farming Sim? Fighting Game similar to Smash? Open World RPG similar to older Bethesda games? RTS like StarCraft? Turn-Based like Final Fantasy or Expedition 33? Going mad for power in a 4X? Another genre entirely?

What genre would you all prefer to see have a game made first? I will basing it off of likes

I plan to make a game in each genre but for now figuring out which to do first is the goal. Have concepts, tools, experience, devs, etc ready to make anything the community wants

Edit:

Leaving this open for 2 more days. Whichever gets the most between the 2D Fighting and Turn-Based comments. They are both tied at 14 upvotes

Testing different ones out and wanted to see what your success rates were

What Distros do you want to shoutout and why you think they are doing well/are the best at what they do?

I am curious what is out there and have only had some experience with Linux Mint, SteamOS, and Pop!_OS
