Youtube and practice (for both the airbrushing and the brush painting). And even then, I would say I still don't know a lot about it (definitely deficient in that practice part).

Some specific videos I watched were:

For brush painting, I essentially transferred skills I learned for miniature painting, and any good video for that will help you with the other. Mr. Hobby Gundam Color paints (semi-gloss) tend to dry to a similar gloss as Bandai's plastic, so I thin those with either a bit of Isopropyl alcohol, Mr. Hobby Acrysion Thinner, or Mr. Color Leveling Thinner.

Zakupla-kun DX

This was a neat kit to build. Almost a surreal experience to clip a display runner out of an actual runner. The last image is a scan of the parts list, just to demonstrate how much goes into the display.

It's been a while since I gave Open Camera a try. My main issue with using my phone for these pictures was just getting the thing to focus where I wanted it and not make everything yellow in my work's less-than-optimal lighting. I'll have to experiment some with focus and/or exposure bracketing in Open Camera and see if that gets me closer to where I want.

Thank you again!

(using my Lemmy account because Mastodon doesn't handle large posts very well)

Thank you for the info. I'd never even heard of Corel Photo-Paint. My main reason to use RAW images is because my personal camera is not a $2,200 piece of equipment; it is an entry-level Nikon from 2012. The images it produces alongside the RAW ones are like 1 MB jpegs (from what I remember). That said, I definitely need to refine my image workflow.

HG Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Norn (Destroy Mode)

(that's a mouthfull)

I went into this kit expecting extra work, but the result was worth it. It even came with an extra shield (from the Unicorn mode?). I do wish it came with some basic beams for the sabers and tonfas, though.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into it. It seems like I will need more than a brief glance at the readme to figure out how it works, but it seems like installation is relatively simple.

[-] augus@ani.social 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

It looks like that would work as an essentially 1-to-1 replacement, especially since I would never need the full GB that instance offers. I could even self-host it, although without an existing proxy config that would likely be a bit too much for me at this point. Thank you for the suggestion.

Edit: Not quite 1-to-1: similar to HomeBox, it does not support linking images, just uploading image files. This isn't a deal breaker, though.

I currently keep track of which model kits, brick building sets, and painting miniatures that I own and whether I have made progress on them in a Google Sheet. As part of my attempt to degoogle, I am looking into various alternatives.

My current preferences for an alternative are:

  • Accessible online
  • Can be edited online/in-browser (potentially through some frontend)
  • Loads relatively quickly/efficiently
    • Hardware is an issue here; my server computer is quite low end
  • Accessible on an Android device (does not have to be able to be edited on mobile)
  • Preferably can display linked images, whether on Nextcloud's filesystem or through hyperlinks

One of the alternatives I've already tried is the Nexcloud Office plugin for my existing Nextcloud server using Collabora Online as a backend. In addition to it loading quite slowly, I had issues editing any files created with the plugin, and after tinkering with it for a while I decided to put that solution aside. This was several months ago.

Another alternative I have considered is coverting this sheet into a database. I do not have much experience with databases (pretty much just creating one in MariaDB for Nextcloud), but from what I know about them this seems like a good use case for one. I do not know what would be best as a frontend; phpMyAdmin? DBeaver?

Any suggestions? If all else fails, I'll just keep an .ods document on Nexcloud and install LibreOffice Viewer on my phone, but I would prefer not to have to download and upload the .ods through Nextcloud every time I want to update my inventory (this is primarily an issue when I update it at work).

This is what I currently use:

Screenshot of a Google Sheet doc with information on multiple model kits

Markdown table with data type guesses if image does not load

Name Number Brand Grade/Type Line Year Image/Link Scale Retail Price Paid Assembled? Painted Yen
Gundam Barbatos Lupus (ASW-G-08) 5055446 Bandai HG (High Grade) I-BO 2016 [Formula1] 1/144 [Formula2]/[USD Retail] $10.19 Y/N/'- Y/N/'- 1000
[TINYTEXT] [VARCHAR] [TINYTEXT] [TINYTEXT] [TINYTEXT] [YEAR] [TEXT] [FLOAT]/[SMALLINT]/[TINYTEXT] [DECIMAL] [DECIMAL] [BOOLEAN] [BOOLEAN] [SMALLINT]

There are only a few formulae used:

  • One to both link to a webpage for that kit and display an image of it; these could be easily separated into two fields
    Formula 1: =HYPERLINK("https://bandai-hobby.net/item/5886/",IMAGE("https://bandai-hobby.net/images/157_5886_s_5pwg9tvxlm5v4gwrz49ly8ry3j8e.jpg"))
  • One to convert the Japanese retail of a product (in the Yen column) to equivalent USD in the release year (could easily be replaced with a manual conversion or a researched US retail)
    Formula 2: =M36&"円 / $"&TEXT(M36*VLOOKUP(F36,'Currency Rates'!$A$2:$B$52,2,FALSE),"#,##0.00")
  • And one to grab the current average conversion rate for the year (again, could be replaced with a quick search)
    Formula 3: =QUERY(GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:JPYUSD","price",DATE(A47,1,1),IF(DATE(A47,12,31)-TODAY()>0,TODAY(),DATE(A47,12,31)),"DAILY"),"select avg(Col2) where Col1 is not null label avg(Col2)''",1)

This last formula is used on a conversion sheet referenced in Formula 2, which looks like this:

Screenshot of a Google Sheet doc with historical JPY-USD conversion rates sorted by year

I appreciate any help.

MGSD Gundam Aerial

Finally figured something out for pictures, just in time to finish another Aerial.

This kit is super fun. The strange proportions highlight a lot of what I like about the original design, and the eyes are absolutely wild. The permet could stand out more, but I appreciate that I can swap between red and blue.

Wow I didn't even know you had posted the same kit a few hours before I did. Your pose is even cooler!

[-] augus@ani.social 3 points 1 year ago

Yet again not sure if my reply went through from Mastodon, so here's the quoted reply:

@orbitz@lemmy.ca Looking for anything that isn't just the top 5 of the year is honestly pretty hard. Here are a few High Grade red releases of varying price and availability from the last couple years:

https://breezewiki.catsarch.com/gunpla/wiki/HGGQ_RGM-79_Light-type_Guncannon

https://breezewiki.catsarch.com/gunpla/wiki/HGCE_ZGMF-2025/F_GELGOOG_Menace_(Lunamaria_Hawke_Custom)

If you have patience and are willing to pivot, you can do a (good) RG kit as your first. You're more likely to finish a kit you like either way.

Looks like there was about an hour delay, at least for it to be publicly visible. Not sure when you got the notification, but I originally responded with my Mastodon account within 5 minutes of receiving your comment.

[-] augus@ani.social 3 points 1 year ago

The bridge may be acting up, so here's my quoted reply:

@jodanlime@midwest.social No paint except panel lining. For the top coat I used two airbrushed coats of Vallejo Matt Varnish.

[-] augus@ani.social 3 points 1 year ago

Not sure if the bridge is working, so here's my quoted comment:

@wirelesswire@lemmy.zip Yeah I lost one of those very small pieces for a few hours. Fantastic kit. I would have been ecstatic to find one for 30% off; it's one of the first kits I put on my "wishlist".

In addition to the very small pieces advice, I would also recommend putting decals and stickers on the wings even if one did not intend to put them anywhere else. They can look kinda boring without the color variation.

RG Gundam Epyon (with decals)

I finally finished putting the decals on my RG Gundam Epyon. Even with the matte top coat I've flaked off two of them, but I'm still happy with the result. I love this kit.

The silver one worked so well on the pistons, but any large flat surfaces or textured surfaces were a challenge. I had to try 3 times to get the spots on the waist armor somewhat decent looking. Almost gave up and used Vallejo Scarlet instead (I only have 6 colors of Mr Hobby available to me, and Shine Red isn't one of them).

HGIBO Gundam Vidar

Super fun kit, as long as you go in expecting to do some painting. Gundam Color Phantom Gray and Gundam Marker Metallic Red were all I needed (besides my panel lining fluid), and I'm pretty happy with the result.

That said, any tips on how to apply the metallic Gundam markers more evenly?
