If you have much in the way of network infrastructure (switches, APs, security cameras, etc.) then some kind of monitoring to alert you if any of it is down. Xymon or LibreNMS for example.

The answer is going vary by package. If the deb file adds a repo containing updates for itself, then yes. If not, then no.
