[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

@null @fediverse I'm blind and have used OCR systems since 1990s. Computer at first, with scanners. Then camera-driven devices.
OCR products pre-llm, were very poor - it's not the first time they detected "O" letter instead of "D", "m" in place of "rn" and vice-versa, Llm has brought some improvements in that approach. The one I'm currently using, called "BeMyAI" inside the "Be My Eyes" desktop and mobile app, provides better information; it's OpenAI API trained with blind people's need and it corrects possible errors. Is it always right? No. It always needs human verification especially for sensitive data. But to read names of a food or a medicine they're OK. Never used those, to read a paper book. It's not worth the effort, buying paper when there's a high risk of error, if there's the digital.

@zqps I'm afraid discrimination has become mainstream. Against queer, against black, against people with disability...

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

@Quokka Sorry, and thanks for explanation. It's a serious situation anyways. This kind of devs shouldn't be accepted into open source community; maybe I'm too extremist

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 10 points 1 week ago (12 children)

@Quokka Wait a moment. Is it the same tesseract that develops the OCR? Because I sometimes use that OCR for NVDA screen reader (non visual desktop access). If so, I'll take it off immediately! This kind of hardcoded deny list, is an abuse. Worse than the one I noticed 25 years ago on MSN messenger where you couldn't label yourself as "John Doe - webmaster of [project]" but then if you named yourself "I'm the drill for young asses" (said it less rude than it was), Msn messenger let you place that display name upfront.
Let me say that if you develop a software where you deliberately block pro-trans, pro-sustainability or topic you dev potentially dislike, your software shouldn't be distributed to the public.

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 1 points 1 week ago (3 children)

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 1 points 1 week ago

@ju_ri @selfhosted I don't think so. The plugin is called "enable mastodon apps"

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

@ju_ri @selfhosted the only issues is that the activitypub client (posting from mastodon clients) doesn't work and gives no errors

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 1 points 1 week ago (4 children)

@ju_ri @selfhosted I've activated fediverse now, but it's a very basic instance with base WordPress. I must rearrange my whole multilingual experience. Damn.

[–] elettrona@poliversity.it 1 points 1 week ago (6 children)

@ju_ri @selfhosted It's driving me completely mad

WordPress and ActivityPub: my first fail

@selfhosted

I've already posted about my success and fail in the past, but I have something else to talk about: ActivityPub fails in my self hosted WordPress (hostinger vps).

Setup: YunoHost, WordPress multisite. For a multisite network, YunoHost requires WordPress to reside in a folder. Such as "domain .ext /folder" and not "site1 . domain .ext" or "site2 .domain .ext"

Started setup, the site apparently works. But, before involving a co-worker to help me with theme, I wanted to try installing ActivityPub plugin first.

Immediately WordPress health system, warned that endpoint webfinger wasn't accessible.

Watching the logs, it was YunoHost ssowat and I tried to comment it on domain's nginx file - /etc/nginx/config.d/domain.ext.conf

Result, from 302 error, it returned 500. "error establishing database connection".

The .well-known stays on /var/www/.well-known, while WordPress lives on /var/www/wordpress__3

I set all YunoHost's permissions to "visitors"

I really don't know where to go, at the moment.

AI, blindness, pros and cons. History included

@eticadigitale

Sorry I write in English, as I want to share a very long article written by an experienced American man, active in the NFB (National Federation of the Blind)

much more experienced than me. I write in English quoting him, so he can even reply if he wants to.

This is especially for the too much polarized "anti-AI" discussions I hear on Italian fediverse as well ("or enthusiasm or eternal curse").

Spoiler: life is much more complex than this! And very often, folks talk here in absolute manner. Considering just THEIR OWN (sighted) point of view. But the world is very, unexpectedly, diverse. With inclusion implying also doubting a principle considered solid.

PS I didn't translate into Italian, it's long, if someone interested I could, but I honestly consider Italian fediverse folks smarter than facebook / tiktok timewasters who just need short texts.

WordPress multisite in selfhosting: one fail, one success

@selfhosted

Starting with the fail: selfhosted site doesn't associate to the official automattic WordPress mobile app; I've (temporarily?) commented the "location xmlrpc.php deny all" rule on /etc/nginx/conf.d/plusbrothers.net'd/wordpress__3.conf

The app correctly generates the "application password" but then returns "impossible to load WordPress site details" (no idea if it's the correct English word).

SUCCESS:
Ulysses and Drafts, two iPhone/iPad writing apps, successfully publish my texts on WordPress posts, as a draft; I can use those and write what I want. I'll try to uncomment xmlrpc deny rule again, then retry.

My goal is to write contents on the app, then finalize it on the site.

OTHER SUCCESS:
site works, both with pure "plusbrothers.net" address and physical WordPress location "plusbrothers.net/wp" - applies to /english as well. Before concretely re-posting old contents and writing new ones, I prefer to have a very solid structure.

I have no idea though, about how vulnerable my website is, hostinger vps YunoHost-driven.

It's been long, long time I didn't work till late in the night, at the moment I'm writing, it's 10 minutes to 3 in the morning!

I promised to my best friend (and content writer) that on July 3rd, the walls of our sentient HIV's house, should have been ready.
And I kept the promise. 3rd July, 3 in the morning, the house stands up. Still dirty, still stinks of building, no possibility to live in it, but at least we won't fall dead with collapsing ceiling.

Blind selfhoster journey continues.

Self hosting: real game starts today

@selfhosted

So, it's done: my main domain has finally got its transfer to Hostinger, new provider where I have the VPS I'm experimenting in.

Real game with WordPress multisite/multilingual and self-hosted Fediverse starts TODAY!

@libri

@scienza

Self-hosting journey update, and WordPress: latest development from a super-newbie

@selfhosted

I must recap as I set my instance to delete 2-weeks-old posts.

Months ago, I talked about my very first journey with self-hosting my digital services, including my website.
As I'm not very skilled with sysadmin stuff, I use a YunoHost installation with all its pros and cons.

Having severe accessibility needs (I'm totally blind) I have limited choices for what concerns CMS software with related extensions if any. So after months of exploration and test, I've come back home. To WordPress.

Last time I updated Fediverse about my experience, I was struggling with multisite network giving an unpleasant error in the non-main site, such as "too_many_redirects"
Making it short, I discovered that YunoHost doesn't let me run a multisite properly when installed in a subdomain such as blog.domain.tld
So I had forcefully to install it in the main domain, and a subdirectory such as domain.tld/wp

Now I'm concentrating on my theme, I will clone it with the plugin "CreateBlockTheme" then activate it network-wide.
I need a multisite for multilingual, as all current multilingual plugins have poor accessibility support, and are mostly paid.

Then I may need a new taxonomy registered to organize stories, the glossary plugin, SEO plugin, ActivityPub, and I should be all set!

The last, hard, challenge I have, is the fact that now my site runs into "domain.tld/permalink-post" for Italian, and "domain.tld/english" for English
The new one should run "domain.tld/wp/post" and "domain.tld/wp/english/post"

YunoHost doesn't let me build a WordPress site in the root directory with multisite installed, so I must find the way to tell nginx I want the product to be physically on /wp/ but browser can point to domain.tld/post or domain.tld/english/post...

And if possible, this change to be in a file on its own, in order to be able to delete it without damaging the whole nginx conf.

Last detail, I'm on hostinger, kvm2 package. vps.

Journey with self hosting for personal blog and fediverse

@selfhosted

Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others.

Current setup: Hostinger vps kvm2 plan, Debian12, YunoHost, Hostinger's docker manager installed.

Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004.

I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others.

So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost.

Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros.

Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract...

In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie.

Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it.

For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system.

A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill.

Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared.

My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks.

Hopefully share others' experiences as well!
Updating this one: experience is evolving.
