Their modeling suggests

Psh, it's only a model.

We know proto families and such exist going back through to PIE and others. We know that languages split off of those and, if I'm remembering correctly, proto-Germanic itself would hit in their 0 +/- 1000 range easily.

After we domesticated plants and animals, however, the planet’s population ballooned—and so did the number of languages.

This feels counterintuitive to me. We had small groups of hunter-gatherers that interacted with other groups far less often (at least presumably) before agriculture. If people generally don't speak like their grandparents today, why wouldn't that be the case then? I guess one could argue that fewer people meant less drift, but i don't know about that.

After agriculture (and arguably even before it in some places), we had more permanent societies with structure, population, governance, etc. Why would this be the place that language drift/division starts happening rather than the opposite?

I'm not a trained anthropologist or anything; it just feels weird to me.

That's unfortunate, especially for kids who may not be allowed to go other places but could use the vending machine in a station (well, if idiots weren't buying them all, anyway).

I still occasionally check a handful of communities related to legal/visa/tax/business in Japan. We tried to get people to move over here, but they didn't and, without the institutional knowledge of long-timers, just starting a community doesn't accomplish much.

I have no idea. I just saw it brought up in a local discussion post. I have zero interest in pokemon so haven't bought anything myself.

Which will do no good against the people lining up at the vending machines in stations and such, waiting for them to be filled, and then buying most/all of their stock.

I'm an overseas voter in a horribly- (and illegally-)gerymandered mess of a state that has only gone redder as I've gotten older. We'll have to see what happens. Not that I have the money or resources to do anything about it from the opposite side of the world.

Looks great! I make the Japanese version somewhat frequently and always up the spice level and use 四川豆板醬

If you really miss it, you can buy a cartridge gas stove and just use that for that one application. I haven't missed it nearly enough to bother busting it out, though.

I used to swear by gas and never wanted to change. Moved to a place with 200v induction and haven't looked back. I have a gas cartridge stove for disaster prep reasons, but I could also pull it out if I really wanted to blast something in a wok or the like (and could do that outside).

I'm not paying for a game that doesn't allow changing difficulty if I want/need. I work two jobs and have to do most home cleaning and maintenance. I used to game competitively back in the early 2000s, but I don't have time for that shit nor gatekeeping.

More like a schwa in Norwegian. I'm not sure about Danish.

It's only 22.2 where I am, but I'm north and it's raining. Not looking forward to this summer.

Some (or maybe all?) of the time, posts I've previously voted on seem to show now visual indicator. When I click again, the number changes in the opposite direction as expected meaning I undid some previous vote. I'm just using this in firefox on PC. Is anyone else seeing this? I can definitely see the style directly after I vote but before I refresh the page. Thanks!

Edit: of course refreshing this post I can't reproduce it. Not sure if it's because it's my post or if there is some time lag or if it's only other instances or something.

On lemmy.world, this is a link to a post and works. Piefed tries to make it a video link which does not.

(unrelated, but to try to find this community, I clicked the magnifying-glass-looking thing to search and it just yelled at me that I couldn't search for a community in the wrong format. If I don't know where a community lives or its exact name, how is that even useful?)

I assume I'm blind, but I moved over from mbin where I could just go to a magazine (community) and click a block button. My browsing strategy is to browse all and not use subscriptions to mostly not limit what I see. However, I don't want to see certain types of porn (for instance).

Thanks!
