And it’s management’s job to multiply the senior’s estimate by 5 and +/-50% for good measure. And even then, that’s a rough estimate at best.

Maybe using points for some planning actually works; I’ve never worked at a place that could use it for actual estimates. My estimates are entirely based on gut feel, my feeling of the complexity involved and my feeling of how much the team can get done. Over the last two years (since metastasizing into a CTO) my overall estimates have pretty much always been in the right ballpark. Which is to say, when the CEO says “We’re going to do X, Y, and Z this quarter,” I say “We’ll be able to reach about 50% completion if we work on all of those at the same time,” I’m usually more or less right.

I’ve never worked with a dev who could make significantly better estimates than me (excluding the early years of my career when my estimates were absolutely awful). Most of the devs I’ve worked with just wouldn’t give estimates; if pushed they’d be as vague as they possibly could. The only boss I’ve had who would give definite estimates was always off by an order of magnitude (as in he thought it would be 10x easier than it was, even though he had decades of experience writing code and managing teams).

Anything that makes the codebase harder to maintain than it should be is technical debt.

I think “meta” here means “a post about the platform I’m posting on”. You know, the original meaning of the word, not the company that decided to name itself after a word because it sounded cool or some other idiotic bullshit like that.

Hahahahaha! No. WSL is in no way a good substitute for a real Linux system. It’s better than nothing, but that’s about it.

That’s preferable to people who don’t ask for help until everything is hopelessly fucked because they kept trying to solve their problem different git commands, none of which they understood.

Devs who are devs for no other reason than money and who don’t give a shit about the quality of their work are a problem.

Not everyone has high emotional intelligence. There’s a fair bit of overlap between programmers/engineers and people on the spectrum. A good code of conduct effectively spells out how to avoid being a dick.

You need to understand how code actually works. If you’ve only worked with highly abstracted languages like Python, Ruby, JavaScript, etc then you should probably start by learning lower level languages like C or C++. Or maybe Rust and Go but they’re kind of low level and abstracted at the same time. If you already know C/C++ then buy yourself an Arduino (or equivalent) and start screwing around. If you’re in school and interested in this as a career, take some electrical engineering or digital circuit design classes.

Assembly languages are always architecture specific. Thats kind of their defining feature. Assembly is readable machine code.

I’m the opposite. AI is best (though not great) at boring shit I don’t want to do and sucks at the stuff I love - problem solving.

The way you wrote it, it sounds like you’re saying, “The FSF is worthless because they didn’t respond to me.” Which may not be what you meant but it still comes across as rather conceited. I don’t see how them not responding to you about your random project is at all relevant to whether the FSF is useful to the FLOSS community.

I’m about ready to rehome my RTX 2080 and get an AMD card so I don’t have to deal with Nvidia’s proprietary garbage or the shit-tier open source drivers.
