On Friday 17th July, Iran carried out an extensive attack on the US occupation base at Al Tanf in Syria. A drone and missile strike targeted a US Special Operations Command base in south-eastern Syria..the first strike on Syrian territory since the toppling of the former government in December 2024.
In a statement, the IRGC said its aerospace forces conducted what it described as the 11th phase of “Operation Nasr-2,” targeting the strategically located base near Syria’s borders with Iraq and Jordan.
The IRGC further claimed the attack destroyed a radar installation and several U.S. military helicopters, while alleging that many American personnel were killed.
This strike occurred as the build up of both Turkish and HTS military forces increases inside Syria, along the border with Lebanon and in the coastal region to the north of Lebanon. I have been reporting on this here and here.
Syrian sources provided more detail on the attack:
Despite previous reports of an almost total evacuation of the Al Tanf base, located on the borders of Syria, Iraq and Jordan, almost 5 months ago - the intensity of the strikes suggested a shift in the site’s operational status. This was not an empty base, in fact, according to sources, the IRGC’s tracking systems and human intelligence in the region detected U.S. forces airdropping “Special Forces” units into the base approximately two weeks before the attack.
Analysis would suggest that the purpose of these drops might be to prepare for a ground incursion across Iraqi territory (Sulaymaniyah Axis) in coordination with the local Kurdish separatist factions in Iraq. One military analyst told me:
The attack reflects the operator’s ability to breach the secrecy surrounding U.S. movements and to convert radio and visual data into precise target coordinates.
According to reports from inside Syria, the strikes inflicted direct damage on the base’s newly constructed infrastructure, neutralised the US elite combat force and derailed the Iraq-Axis operation against Iran. Of course, US media will not report on the planned operations or on the number of casualties - such a critical security breach and the significant scale of damage, as reported, will not be revealed.

Iran has suspended implementation of its agreements with the United States after Washington violated its commitments and continued its attacks, said the Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, stressing that Tehran will honor its obligations only if the US fulfills its own.
Baqaei said on Saturday that Iran has never been the first party to violate its commitments, arguing that Washington effectively abandoned the agreement from its earliest days. He said the entire agreement process is now suspended because of the US breach of its obligations and continued military actions.
He also said Article 5 of the memorandum of understanding does not grant the United States the right to establish a separate independent route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing Iran’s recent restrictions in the strategic waterway, Baqaei said the measures constitute a responsible response to the aggressors’ use of the Strait of Hormuz to launch attacks on Iran. He added that the United States used parts of the strait, along with its military bases in Gulf countries, to carry out military operations against Iran.
Baqaei said ending the war and bloodshed in Lebanon remains a key priority for Tehran. He also claimed that different factions within the U.S. administration are obstructing the implementation of the commitments Washington accepted under the memorandum of understanding.
He further asserted that “the Zionist entity cannot survive without war” and said the so-called “maximum pressure” campaign had targeted ordinary Iranian citizens from the outset.
Gharibabadi: Aggression Will Achieve Nothing
Separately, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran is engaged in the decisive defense of the country, adding that the United States has once again realized that “these acts of aggression will not achieve any result.”
Gharibabadi said Iran had been engaged in negotiations when the United States, in his account, violated its commitments under the memorandum of understanding by carrying out military attacks.
“The United States effectively violated all of its commitments and halted the entire process, and we, in turn, suspended all of our obligations under that memorandum of understanding,” he said.
He added that if Washington had acted wisely, it would have pursued other solutions, but Iran’s course now is to defend the country decisively and respond to the aggression.

USA: THE US Trade Representative’s office (USTR) has said it will impose a 25% tariff on most imports from Brazil. The charges are set to come into effect in a week, on July 22.
The trade barriers are the first of their kind since the Supreme Court annulled the cornerstone of US President Donald Trump’s prior sweeping tariff regime, famously announced on what Trump dubbed “Liberation Day” in 2025.
It also comes amid friction between the Trump administration and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, not least because of Trump’s ties to Brazil’s former right-wing populist president Jair Bolsonaro and his family. Brazil votes in general elections this October.
What US measures are planned against Brazil?
Following an investigation, the USTR argued that Brazil’s trade practices on a range of issues from digital trade to illegal deforestation were unfair. It also singled out Brazil’s instant payment system, Pix, arguing that this disadvantages US credit card companies.
“Extensive negotiations with Brazil over the past year have not resolved these issues, but we remain open to continuing negotiations with Brazil to bring about long-needed changes to the problems identified in this investigation,” the USTR’s Jamieson Greer said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Greer called safeguarding American economic interests against unfair practices the “bedrock of President Trump’s America First policies.”
The tariffs will apply to most Brazilian imports, including sugar, agricultural machinery, clothing, electrical machinery, paper and steel.
But various products that are in considerable demand among US consumers or businesses are exempt, including beef, coffee, rare earths, energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, organic honey and pig iron.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the blame lay with Lula and his administration, asserting that they had not negotiated with the US in good faith.
“[Lula’s] economic policies are bad for Americans and bad for Brazilians,” Rubio wrote. “For the past year, Lula has put his own ego ahead of making a deal for the welfare of the Brazilian people, and these tariffs are the price for that.”
How do Trump’s ties to Lula and the Bolsonaros fit in?
Brazil’s President Lula on Thursday called the move a “lamentable milestone” in bilateral ties.
He said there was “no justification” for the “unilateral imposition” of tariffs, and played a somewhat Trumpian card in reverse, alluding to the US’ sizeable trade surplus with Brazil. He said Brazil would seek reciprocal measures via a World Trade Organization dispute mechanism.
Lula also alleged that the move was “part of the plot built with the active collaboration of the Bolsonaro family,” a reference to former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is facing a jail sentence for plotting a coup following his attempts to cling to power after his narrow defeat in 2022’s presidential election.
Trump and Bolsonaro, who for a time fled to Florida when facing prosecution in Brazil, are considered to be close allies. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, one of Jair’s sons, held talks with Trump in the Oval Office in late May, a few weeks after the last meeting between Trump and Lula.
Presidential hopeful Bolsonaro the younger, however, appealed at a USTR meeting in May not to impose tariffs on Brazil, arguing that this was liable to help Lula’s bid for a record fourth term in office this October.
Why is the Trump administration having to revisit its tariff policies?
The new tariffs are imposed based on investigations into supposed unfair trade practices under Section 301 of the US Trade Act.
This became necessary because of the Supreme Court nullifying the prior wave of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump’s administration, deeming that they had overstepped his authority.
The USTR has since launched almost 80 investigations of this nature, seemingly as it tries to lay the groundwork to impose replacement barriers to trade. All manner of major and minor powers face such investigations, including China, the EU, India, Japan, South Korea and Mexico. ^___^

Over two days, July 12th and July 13th, the next Long March 5 launch vehicle set to fly arrived at the Wenchang Space Launch Site, after being trucked from Qinglan Port (清澜港) in Wenchang (文昌市), Hainan (海南) province, and several days of sailing from its production sites in Tianjin (天津)1 and Shanghai (上海市)2 aboard a specialized transport ship.
The newly delivered launch vehicle is set to send the Chang’e 7 robotic Moon mission towards a polar lunar orbit, where it will reside for about ninety days ahead of a landing near the south pole's Shackleton crater. That landing site has been chosen to search for and study water ice.
With the Long March 5 at Wenchang, the China Manned Space Agency3 and the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology shared:
“Next, the launch vehicle will undergo final assembly and testing at the launch site alongside the Chang’e 7 spacecraft, which arrived earlier. Currently, all systems involved in the mission at the launch site are proceeding with preparations for the Chang’e 7 mission according to schedule.”

As noted by the two organizations, the Chang’e 7 spacecraft has been at the launch site for a few months, having been shipped overnight in April. Previous weeks have seen the mission’s orbiter, lander, rover, and hopper undergo final instrument installation and integration with one another. One of those is the U.S.-Hong Kong-led ILO-C astronomical observatory.
Upcoming preparatory processes ahead of launch will see the Long March 5’s first-stage, second-stage, and four boosters individually inspected and tested. They will then be brought together on top of a mobile launch platform. At the same time, the complete Chang’e 7 spacecraft will be encapsulated inside the vehicle’s 5.2-meter-diameter fairing, later being placed atop of the rest of the Long March 5.
Joint testing ahead of a rollout to Launch Complex 101 is expected to take a few weeks to ensure all systems for the launch vehicle and spacecraft are working as designed. Barring the appearance of major issues, Chang’e 7 should be on the launch pad in the second half of August.
The upcoming launch will see the Long March 5 send its third lunar-bound spacecraft towards the Moon, with Chang'e 7 being the payload for its twelfth flight and the nineteenth of the Long March 5 series. The Long March 5 last flew in June with a geostationary satellite.

Newly identified gas giant is the faintest exoplanet ever directly imaged from earth.
On Wednesday, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) announced that a team of astronomers discovered an exoplanet, named Beta Pictoris d, located about 63 light-years from Earth.

Detected with the Very Large Telescope (VLT), Beta Pictoris d is a gas giant, like Jupiter or Saturn, although it is 2.4 times more massive than the former.
However, compared with the planets that share the Beta Pictoris star in the Beta Pictoris planetary system, known as Beta Pictoris b and Beta Pictoris c, the newly discovered planet is smaller.
Beta Pictoris b and Beta Pictoris c each have a mass about 10 times greater than that of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system.
Beta Pictoris d remained hidden from astronomers for years, in part because it is relatively cool and therefore extremely faint compared with its host star. However, years of analyzing images of the Beta Pictoris system led to the detection of Beta Pictoris d, for which direct photographs already existed, although the planet had remained “hidden” in those images.

“Direct imaging, in which the light from an object is captured as in a photograph, only works for planets that are bright enough to appear alongside their much brighter host stars,” the ESO said, referring to the challenge of detecting Beta Pictoris d.
According to Markus Bonse, an ESO astronomer in Germany and co-author of the study on the planet’s discovery, the new planet is 100 times fainter than Beta Pictoris b, the well-known planet in the same system, making it the faintest exoplanet ever directly imaged from Earth.
The planet Beta Pictoris b was photographed almost 18 years ago in one of the most iconic images in astrophysics when ESO produced the first direct image of a planet orbiting another star in the Beta Pictoris system, where scientists had initially only seen a disk of cosmic dust.
Following the discovery of Beta Pictoris b came that of Beta Pictoris c, and, thanks to the use of the VLT’s ERIS instrument, Bonse and his team discovered the existence of Beta Pictoris d.
The ESO describes the instrument as a new technology on the VLT designed to obtain the clearest images of space through spectrographic and infrared technology.
The discovery of Beta Pictoris d was confirmed by another independent study by the space agencies of the United States, Europe and Canada, which used the James Webb Space Telescope.

Quirky translation + at time of reporting it was unclear what even caused it, since they were already in the area they probably set off an explosive device, whereas "Israel bombs Lebanon" might imply air raids, which were reported separately.
This is all the most closely-linked pro-Hezbollah news outside of just posting Central Military Media directly (they repost it), but they're not consistent with phrasing. Al-Manar, PressTV don't 100% of the time refer to it as "the illegal Zionist entity" or "the third unprovoked war of imperialist aggression".
[2026-07-12] Mehr News – Iran Army says target bank updated for all scenarios
Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia told state television that the U.S. has a long history of broken commitments, from the 2018 JCPOA withdrawal to the latest ceasefire deal violations. He said Washington was trying to impose an unauthorised shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, contrary to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding that assigns control of transit arrangements to Iran.
"The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran are obligated to provide the necessary security for passage through the Strait of Hormuz and to apply the arrangements envisioned by Iran under the agreement," he said. "We are standing behind this with full authority and will firmly defend the rights of the Iranian people as stipulated in the agreement."
Akraminia said the army never trusted the Americans and had used the ceasefire to boost readiness and combat capability. "The army's target bank has been updated and has the necessary readiness for all scenarios. The Americans would be better off ending their interventions in the region."
He said the U.S. should consider its regional allies and not expose them to further insecurity, warning that "whenever they have taken action against Iran, they have received their response, and the same happened last night." The overnight exchange saw the IRGC close the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. warplanes strike Iran's southern coast, and Iranian ballistic missiles hit U.S. bases in Jordan and Qatar, and Oman.
The spokesman also praised the mass funeral turnout for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as a display of national unity and soft power, saying the people had turned grief into an epic and demanded vengeance for the martyred leader.

[2026-07-11] SABA – Israeli aggression death toll in Lebanon rises to 4,322
The death toll from the Israeli aggression on Lebanon has risen to 4,322 killed and 12,210 injured since March 2, bringing the total number of casualties to 16,532, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
The ministry said the past 24 hours recorded one death and three injuries, adding that 135 healthcare workers have been killed and 406 injured in 176 Israeli attacks on medical and ambulance teams.
Despite a ceasefire understanding announced in June that included Lebanon, Israeli forces continue to carry out daily violations, the report added.
[2026-07-11] PressTV – Israel escalates aggression on south Lebanon with air, ground raids
Israeli warplanes have carried out multiple air raids on towns in southern Lebanon while the regime’s ground forces targeted the eastern outskirts of Beit Yahoun.
Israeli warplanes launched two raids with four missiles on the town of Mansouri in southern Lebanon on Saturday despite ongoing preparations for the implementation of a US-mediated framework agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv.
The regime also continued bombardments of residential areas in several towns in southern Lebanon, including a fresh strike on the town of Houla.
Al-Manar correspondent reported that Israeli drones and gliders also dropped sonic bombs on Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Mansouri, setting fire to houses in Houla and Haddatha.
The reporter further said that an Israeli ground unit has pushed toward the eastern outskirts of Beit Yahoun in southern Lebanon.
The unit consisted of three Merkava tanks and two armored D9 bulldozers, and the incursion was accompanied by the firing of two artillery shells and intensive combing operations in the area.
In a separate attack, Israeli forces carried out another bombardment targeting the area between the towns of Arnoun and Kfartebnit.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage from the reported incidents.
The latest attacks mark a continuation of Israeli operations across southern Lebanon, where several towns have come under repeated strikes in recent days.
On Friday, a young man was martyred following an aerial raid targeting a motorcycle on the al-Doha road in the town of Kfarrumman in the Nabatieh district.
An Israeli drone also targeted a car in the same area, seriously wounding another young man, who was transferred to a hospital in the city of Sidon.
Earlier in the day, two people were injured in an Israeli drone strike on a van as they were collecting rubbish between Shoukin and Kfar Dajjal.
Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon occur despite a framework agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26 under US mediation, which aims to end the offensive and secure Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
Israeli forces continue to occupy regions in southern Lebanon, with some areas held for decades and others taken during the 2023-2024 war, while they have advanced over 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory in the most recent offensive.
Since March 2, the Israeli military’s offensives in Lebanon have claimed the lives of over 4,300 people and injured more than 12,200 others, according to reports from Lebanese authorities, while also displacing more than one million individuals.
