I have been really enjoying working with Avalonia, it is a .NET library that works across windows, Linux, and Mac and allows you to use C# for desktop app development on those environments. Its what MAUI should have been.

I was just nodding along, reading your post thinking, yup, agreed. Until I saw there was a PR to fix it that signal ignored, that seems odd and there must be some mitigating circumstances on why they haven't merged it.

Otherwise that's just inexcusable.

This whole problem could be avoided by running the API on the grill itself, fully locally on the lan.

Seems like the grill is a dumb client that polls the cloud API to determine what action to take, and then the phone app pushes commands to the cloud for the grill.

An overly complicated setup that only forces you into their walled garden.

That sounds awful. And a major loss to accessibility. Here's hoping one of the standards gains traction as the one path everyone can agree on.

I think the issue is that on mobile especially, switching contexts between apps is incredibly difficult compared to desktop and as such it's easier for one app maker to include everything so it can contest switch more easily. The "share" mechanisms on Android and iOS are great for the common use cases but harder for more nuanced things.

That and keeping you within their ecosystem drives engagement which increases profit.

That's terrible advice.
