For all of the attention in the early days about Lemmy being rust based and thus focused on performance, the database seems to be the main bottleneck neck and from anecdotal monitoring of the other admins complaints I'd say that seems true.

Seems like some design issues lead to heavy database usage and its going to be really hard to optimize away from that.

I don't really have a better idea, just acknowledging even a small instance has to scale disproportionally to its size when the rest of the network grows and that's heavy on the database specifically.

Agree. It works well, but in the context of the original meme, not getting updates is a risk to Lemmy api breaking changes breaking the app. There's also a few annoying theming issues with eternity. For a free app its good, but leaves something wanting compared to some of the other apps. Even if it has the better UI.

Id be curious the surface area of those million population centers? Lots of the US is very spread out even for "cities" only the old cities on the East Coast have significant density.

It's a never ending onslaught of beginner questions and experienced folks with domain knowledge burn out. I'm sure it's good when it's new and fresh and everyone is exited to participate, but that wears out. It's why things went away from mailing lists, or why mailing lists started getting archived, so they could be searched.

That accurately describes the state we're in today, it is that way (requiring trucks for a significant leg of the "last mile") due to the incredible amount of subsidizing being done for road maintenance.

This also makes me wonder if Android does the same thing with its device encryption, since you must login with a Google account.
