If there is something that can be done, well then it means that I have some control.

If all I can do is burn myself out… it would not make the world better

My coping mechanism: when I feel that I am going to be overwhelmed by bad news or the cruelty for the sake of it.

  1. Is this something I can influence in a way or another? The answer is typically no (otherwise I would have already worked on addressing)
  2. Spending emotional energies on this would change anything for this instance? The answer is always no
  3. If I keep on wasting emotional energies on this topic that I can’t change, will I have the energies for having an impact on things I can have an impact on?

This makes me realise that the best I can do for the system is, sadly, ignore the problem. Not because I don’t care but for a strategic effort in doing what I can

Historical fascism wasn’t like that: big companies were watched more closely. Each director board of a large company needed to have at least one representative of the fascist party.

Of course, the question is what you do with that power. And there probably fascism fails the “evil test”

But in principle I think that business (especially big business) should serve the common interest (represented by the state) and not the other way around

Added an edit given it wasn’t clear

I would take the last one… but it seems more the contrary these days

Edit: probably it wasn’t clear: I meant the business part. People are not influencing the state evidently

Not US but the answer is simple.

IDs are a taboo in the US (otherwise the government would interfere with your privacy or something).

So they have

  • Passports (too bad that a small percentage of population has)
  • Birth certificates (yeah, super secure /s, in practice just a way to bar people that changed their name/surname)
  • Driving licenses/liquor id: these are the closest to IDs but technically they are not ID. The proposed changes are exactly for stopping accepting driving licenses
  • SSN: don’t even make me started

Ok this would be at inference time (solving the challenges) as opposed to the training that was described in the article.

This makes things more believable

Oooorrrr there is more to the story

It would be interesting to read the post mortem (if they will release). In particular in which phase of the training it escaped the sandbox, in which way it used the information. Training is different from inference, I doubt there is a context there and where would the model store these information? In the weights?! That makes little sense to me

No, the vast majority of EU countries are eligible for ESTA that is as close to no visa as it gets in the US

[–] lavander@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 days ago (4 children)

This is the case now.

US is adding extra requirements to keep the status quo.

Now either EU accepts it (this proposal) or hard line (and consider that US has other ways to access the data of Europeans). Problem is that if the EU decides to not give access, likely on this administration they will stop EU to enter visa free.

Exactly like for the tariffs, EU can either do the same or accept the US citizens visa free.

Typically this would mean require visa for US citizens that means a lot of lost opportunities for everyone (exactly like tariffs)

If I went on a date with this person and I don’t realise what’s going on, I hope so much that Claude would suggest to not date me… if I realised, the date would not last enough to help Claude with the training 🤣

Sure he was… And the agents know that he was illegal… and they left even knowing he was illegal…

And probably he was using a car as a weapon (car is not visible here but clearly he had one)

All the ICE justifications are soooo believable

As opposed to the northern/southern hemisphere that has:

  • a clear reference point (equators)
  • traditionally we don’t model a rotation north/south

Western/eastern hemisphere

  • doesn’t have a clear reference (Greenwich?)
  • traditionally we model rotation on the north/south axis so western/eastern would depend from the time
