This comes a few days after Jack Dorsey confirmed that he had left the board of Bluesky and then starting to use Tw(X)tter and calling Tw(X)tter "freedom technology". Coincidence ?
The Amazon story is really old and Ubuntu did hear the critical voices and reverted the change. The terminal ads can be annoying on servers but you can turn them off.

If you want to throw dirt on Ubuntu, let's talk about Snaps and the messy Snap Store and how the current Ubuntu site looks like (not desktop user friendly really), and what they did to LXD
On Reddit: “Windows is being enshitified. How can we cope with it?” On Lemmy: “Windows is being enshitified. Good thing we’ve moved to Linux”I think I see a pattern here.
Interesting. I guess it has to do with what you are used to and what feels comfortable.
Linus Torvalds once made this remark :
When you say 'I wrote a program that crashed Windows,' people just stare at you blankly and say 'Hey, I got those with the system, for free.'
If I think back of the days that I was using Linux and I saw friends and family using Windows95 that had just launched (with a massive hype, and using a Rolling Stones song to promote it) the Blue Screen of Death was fairly normal for folks. And they lived with it, and they continued to live with it because they thought that they had no choice, and they were incredibly happy to not having to use DOS anymore. Later some of the folks I knew after having their Windows computer flocked with Windows viruses they bought a Mac, and as a matter of saying, lived happily ever after. Not everyone can afford Macs though. And not every "normie" is ready to use Linux.
Following this conversation and here it was a pleasant surprise to see this pinned post from a GoToSocial developer 🙂

Kind of agree. Though there is pi-hole and several others. And there's i2p, Freenet (now called Hyphanet) and GNUnet, and similar.
Your comment reminds me of Metallica many years ago. Their first albums were really good I thought. Then they cut their hair, their music started to sound more mainstream and I heard from friends that the band kind apologized for the anti war lyrics on their earlier albums. I guess money talks in strange ways.
2024, the most memorable year of Linux gaming so far :-)
"Paid for by a state actor" Yes, who knows.
-
Could be a lone "black hat" or a group of "black hats". Who knows.
-
Could be the result of a lot of public criticism in the news regarding Pegasus spyware. Who knows.
-
Could be paid by companies without any state actors involved. Who knows.
-
Could be a lone programmer who wants power or is seeking revenge for some heated mailing list discussion. Who knows.
The question of trust has been mentioned in this case of a sole maintainer with health problems. What I asked myself is : How did this trust develop years ago ? People trusted Linus Torvalds and used the Linux kernel to build Linux distributions with to the point that the Linux kernel became from a tiny hobby thing a giant project. At some point compiling from source code became less fashionable and most people downloaded and installed binaries. New projects started and instead of tar and gzip things like xz and zstd were embraced. When do you trust a person or a project, and who else gets on board of a project ? Nowadays something like :
curl -sSL https://yadayada-flintstones-revival.com | bash
is considered perfectly normal as the default installation of some software. Open source software is cool and has kind of produced a sort of revolution in technology but there is still a lot of work to do.

LibreWolf FTW! 👍
Is the UK turning into a dictatorship or an undeveloped country ? How is independent press doing over there ?

There's more to it. The mono-culture is one thing, but rolling out the update to millions of computers on the same days sounds like a bad idea.
Fun fact in 2008, with nuclear submarines, the mono-culture was not that bad yet.
