Hello Lemmy! Yesterday I released the first version of an alternative frontend for Threads: Shoelace. It allows for fetching posts and profiles from Threads without the need of any browser-side JavaScript. It's written in Rust, and powered by the spools library, which was co-developed between me and my girlfriend. Here's a quick preview:

A screenshot of Shoelace's homepage, showing the logo on top, the title "Shoelace", the subtitle "an alternative frontend for Threads", an input bar with the tooltip "Jump to a profile...", and at the bottom three links: "hub", "donate", and "v0.1".

Mark Zuckerberg's profile on Shoelace, showing three posts: One showcasing columns on the official Threads frontend, another congratulating himself for 1.2M+ downloads in his company's new AI software, and the glimpse of a post related to the "metaverse" Post by münecat on Shoelace, announcing the release of a video essay criticizing the field of evolutionary psychology

The official public instance (at least for now) is located at https://shoelace.mint.lgbt/, if y'all wanna try it out. There's also instructions to deploy it inside the docs you can find in the README. Hope y'all enjoy it!

feddit.de has been giving "Server error" for some time but I read that the server is still working when using a Lemmy app. Tried the Photon front-end today and choosing feddit.de as instance.

My question (I'm just curious, I have no account on feddit.de) is : Can an alternative front-end on their server co-exist with the other server software ? I guess it would be a matter of installing Photon and then point nginx configuration to that. Or am I missing something crucial ?

If you're in the EU you can vote and help to make some of them go away with the coming elections which are pretty soon.

If you want to test several Linux distributions Ventoy can be useful. You can have 10 or more different Linux distributions on one USB stick depending on the size of the stick. This will also save you time "flashing" an image iso to the stick each time because with Ventoy you'd simply copy the image iso files to the stick, quick and easy.

Fully agree! I've read that devices that run on electricity are not so loud. It's the mobile ones running on fossil fuel that are so loud.Even with ear-plugs in it is distracting me to be productive or to relax.I've talked with people I know, and told them about the unbearable noise.Their response : "Yeah, but think about elderly people that could slip because of all the leaves".Well, how did people cope with this decades ago when these loud devices were not super popular ?

Bold :-) openSUSE is based on zypper and rpm. Arch Linux uses its own package system.

p.s. Please replace that Change my mind guy with a Calvin and Hobbes one.

I fear it is like with WhatsApp : "But all my friends are on Discord so I have no choice!".

With uBlock Origin you can go Easy Medium and Hard mode https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Blocking-mode and also set your blocking preferences per site.

PS. “but what about GIMP, or Krita, or Inkscape, or OpenOffice, or using rsync for cloud storage, or <YOUR_FAVORITE_TOOL>?” you may ask. Trust me, I tried it all. Every last presentation, raster/vector graphics software out there. Regardless of how much I hate Adobe, their software is top tier, and until GIMP becomes the Blender of graphic design, I can’t really rely use it for most of my purposes :(

The Trust me, I tried it all. and mentioning OpenOffice in one paragraph doesn't feel quite right. OpenOffice is obsolete. Instead there is ONLYOFFICE and LibreOffice as open source choices for Linux users, available as Flatpak, Snap and probably AppImage.

Reading a bit into this https://guix.gnu.org/manual/en/html_node/Binary-Installation.html The irony!

The only requirement is to have GNU tar and Xz.
