Practically the same thing really

Normally I would agree, but Wi-fi on this thing adds a lot to it. It allows you to scrape box art and a short video that gets shown when you hover on each game you have, and it lets you connect to retroachievements as well as easily transfer files from your PC wirelessly with FTP.

It's definitely not needed but it makes things a bit more convenient for me IMO.

No idea what the other commenter is on about, I used Zorin ~2 years ago. It's a great distro for people new to Linux, and IMO has the cleanest aesthetic of any distro I've used. It was also super stable and reliable.

My issue with it (and ultimately the reason why I moved) is that it aims to be very stable which means its packages can get very outdated. I think the Nvidia drivers they used at the time I was on it were two years old. It's not something most people would notice especially with how much Flatpak is used nowadays, but you'll run into annoying cases where that thing you want to update isn't available in that package manager.

Even looking at the website, Zorin 18 is out but it seems people on Zorin 17 will have to wait a few weeks for a way to upgrade.

It's Arabic. The pic is a pun on "Good morning" which is written sabah el-fol. The picture says sabah el-farawla which roughly translates to "Good Strawberring".

See also: Bloomberg interview with the team on why it took so long.

Seems like the TLDR is just they were working on it and didn't want to spoil anything. That's why they were radio silent. They also expected it to release way earlier but the game kept ballooning in scope.

Just finished the video, and I think it's a fantastic intro to using lights in Godot! I want to mention though that SDFGI runs terribly whenever you move the camera quickly, so I wouldn't recommend it for any serious projects. There's a PR to replace it with something better (also mentioned in the video) but there hasn't been movement in a year, so who knows when that'll come around.

Also WASM can't directly manipulate the DOM so it can't really be used for handling HTML/CSS, all front-end stuff still has to be done with JS.

Announcing Swift 6 (www.swift.org)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by popcar2@programming.dev to c/programming@programming.dev

The big thing about this release is it is a huge leap forward to making Swift a cross-platform language, and not something only built for Mac/iOS

Swift 6 unifies the implementation of Foundation across all platforms. The modern, portable Swift implementation provides consistency across platforms, it’s more robust, and it’s open source. macOS and iOS started using the Swift implementation of Foundation alongside Swift 5.9, and Swift 6 brings these improvements to Linux and Windows.

Swift is designed to support development and execution on all major operating systems, and platform consistency and expansion underpins Swift’s ability to reach new programming domains. Swift 6 brings major improvements to Linux and Windows across the board, including support for more Linux distributions and Windows architectures. Toolchains for all of the following platforms are available for download from Swift.org/install.

Very good stuff in this update! The new page quickly showing all the changes is also a lot easier to digest than a 5,000 word essay blog post.

I've already been on 4.3 since the dev previews, so more than anything I'm excited for this release so the team can finally get to merging all those PRs that were shelved for 4.4. Lots of performance optimizations and big changes I'm excited for are coming in that next update. The wait continues!

I was recently contracted to make a neat prototype of a game. It's a twinstick shooter with MOBA elements, you got minions coming out of towers attacking other minions and the goal is to destroy towers to make your way in and destroy the enemy base.

Screenshot of the game

Navigation in Godot is pretty neat, very hassle-free.

Make sure you get a laptop with a modern Ryzen processor since the battery life (and performance on battery) is often a lot better than Intel. There are a lot out there that fit the bill like Lenovo's yoga/ideapad lineup. Just be weary of two things:

  • Some 14" laptops may have soldered RAM or SSDs making them impossible to upgrade
  • Don't go off of processor names, they're often pretty misleading. For example a Ryzen 7 7730U is significantly worse than a Ryzen 7 7840U.

Better late than never. It's going to take a while for people to get used to not needing the dotenv package.

Flairs and ability to block instances as a user would be soooooo nice. Thank you.
