Is the a way to de Google Onn 4K easily? Based on what I see in search results, it's fairly technical. Maybe I need to keep looking.

It's a blend of questions I guess, because there are so many considerations. Still, I only have one old laptop so far.

Goal: Non-technical native TV experience with streaming, live TV, live sports

I recently bought an Onn 4K Pro directly from Walmart. I've set it up with the following:

  • Downloader (for VPN and other apps)
  • CinemaHQ (for live TV)
  • Stremio/Nuvio (for streaming shows and movies)
  • TFlix and Norofire (for live sports)

I also have an old laptop running Linux Mint hooked up to my TV. I bought an integrated keyboard and mouse to navigate, where I use fmhy.net to stream stuff, mostly TV/movies and live sports (haven't found reliable live TV channels).

Question: Is a streaming box better, or old laptops?

I want to set this up so my family can use it too, so it needs to be as easy and non-technical as possible. I want to give family members boxes or laptops that they can easily use with this setup (or something similar).

This is actually why I started using Nuvio, since you can set up profiles and the configuration carries over to every device (so I wouldn't need to set up 5+ devices manually).

I would think that the Onn boxes are best for this, but I have several concerns:

  1. You need a Google account to set it up.
  2. Google is cracking down in ways that would affect "sideloading" particularly on Google devices (Onn runs Google TV).

If I can continue finding some old hardware (Thinkpads, Macbooks) for ~$125 or less, is it worth it to have an old laptop instead of a brand new streaming box? What do you think would be a good price range for hardware in this case? And how old is "too old"?

IIRC, Home Depot overwhelmingly donates to Republicans. So yeah, that won't happen. Or it'll be some bullshit thing that makes it seem like they're doing something to the public eye. But what matters is where the money goes.

With Jellyfin doesn't everything need to be downloaded somewhere and then added to it?

I agree about the family stuff. I was hoping to just configure everything for them, which is why I was hoping Stremio or Nuvio would work. Because then the configuration carries over to the other devices once I sign into my account.

Oh so you're thinking about it from the lens of a standard mail provider, correct? I was more so asking what the difference or advantage was compared to an alias service like Addy, Simple login etc.

So a Torrentio alternative is necessary is what I'm understanding?

I went with Premiumize instead and no issues. Very straightforward.

I'll try ToreentsDB, thanks. I was planning on paying for TorBox with a Privacy(.)com virtual card, not my actual bank card.

Public WiFi is s good idea, and I'll try that. Thanks.

Ahoy, fellow pirates. I'm having 2 issues:

1. "No streams found" on Stremio when SurfShark is turned on.

Call me crazy, but this basically defeats the purpose of SurfShark. They work when I turn it off. Even turning off "CleanWeb" on SurfShark doesn't do it.

Any ideas why?

2. TorBox doesn't let me pay.

This is a weird one. It seems TorBox isn't very privacy-friendly. I did the one-day trial, and then wanted to pay. But they prevented me from paying altogether. Their support doesn't say why, but they want me to disable my browser extensions, turn off my VPN, etc. Makes no sense to me, but I'm tired of trying. And I'm sure if I create a new account with them, the same thing will happen.

Who should I use instead of TorBox?

My priority is getting set up on Stremio and/or Nuvio.tv, but I was also hoping that my debrid service would integrate nicely with CinemaHQ.

I was looking at put.io, but on CHQ there are only the following services:

  • Premiumize
  • TorBox
  • AllDebrid (I heard this is having issues recently?)
  • EasyNews
  • Trakt

My email provider has domain alias functionality. I can connect multiple domains to it. Let's say I'm ratm@domain1.com.

I can buy domain2.com and create an email address called anon@domain2.com. All emails (to both addresses) will land in the same inbox.

I can also create a catch-all email address so that I can create login unique emails for each service, like: lemmy@domain2.com, mastodon@domain2.com, etc.

So I guess my question is: What do I get from an email alias service that I'm not already getting from my email provider?

Is it maybe that I won't be able to reply from the service emails? Like, would I not be able to reply from lemmy@domain2.com since it's only a catch-all? So I can receive mail to it, but can't send from it?
