Not only are we technical folks (only 5% of the population not their target audience, it seems most people don't care enough about ads to ever try to stop them... at all.

not inherently no. just like computers, the internet, gps, tor etc., all came from government/military funding
the first digital computer was even created specifically to calculate how to kill people better in the war.
they shouldn't have the data in the first place. constant data leaks have shown us that is the only way to have some privacy.
A really important thing to remember with all licenses is that they're only as useful as your ability to enforce them... in court. And there's a non-zero chance that at least some of these are practically unenforceable anyways.
2024 Mazdas have touchscreens, so much for that analog vision of theirs. And they have just as much telematics and always-connected privacy-invading tech as other makes.
OP doesn't say where they are, but at least in the US, there is no more such a thing as the "cellular network" like the old circuit-based analog systems or 2G/3G, practically everything is VoIP now. All carriers are requiring VoLTE at a minimum which is IP-based (and so is everything that will come after it). So to me, using a different app like Signal is not going to be a huge difference in quality as long as the codec being used is a similar bitrate to what VoLTE uses (AMR-WB I think at a minimum).
