I would like to use it (or any biometric authentication at all) on Linux with my USB fingerprint reader (DigitalPersona 4500), but it seems broken in libfprint and the devs are unresponsive to their gitlab issues. Using a Windows VM just for fingerprint support is not something I want to do either.

Yes you are right. I don't think there is a realistic way for most people to be anonymous or private online anymore given all these offensive and invasive techniques being used regularly now. Hell cloudflare fingerprints people with TLS alone, and that doesn't care about javascript or anything else above it.

I wouldn't fault a casual user for not backing up their encryption key because they wouldn't be swapping hard drives in the first place. And the tech savvy people already know to backup keys.
