Not only that but most 3D printing is done with PLA which doesn't generate meaningful microplastics. I mean, it does but they only last a short time out in the wild. A study funded by the state of California found that PLA will last up to three years of left out in the environment (e.g. not in a trash dump).
Three years is nothing. Also consider that many animals can eat and digest PLA. Furthermore, if it ends up in your body it will eventually be broken down.
The real microplastics problem comes from tires and plastics like ABS that are used in f'ing everything. ABS microplastics last like 400 years or something like that.
Other plastics last even longer but the studies I've looked at all suggest the same thing: Tires and ABS.
Even PET water bottles aren't as bad because they only last 80-100 years (until *fully" broken down). That sounds like a long time but also consider that PET fibers are mostly inert and don't seem to absorb and re-release nasty things like ABS.
Don't get me wrong: PET microplastics (which mostly consist of tiny fibers from textiles—not from bottles) are 100% a problem. They're just a fraction of the problem of everything else.
For reference, the biggest problem with PET fibers is that they float and can be carried by the wind. That means they tend to settle on top of soil which causes it to absorb more heat and retain less moisture... Requiring more watering. Whereas the butawhateverthefucktoxicshit that tires break down into can result in soil that's harmful to life (in general). Enough of it and nothing will grow at all.
That's why you rarely see weeds sprouting up from kids playgrounds that were filled with chopped up car tires. Well, that and the fact that they can get really hot.
Reminder: TikTok is not actually important. Everyone can live their lives without TikTok, YouTube, etc. There's an infinite amount of ways to entertain ourselves and there's a lot of competing apps.
This isn't the government abusing its power to shut down some small business/upstart. It's shutting down a serious national security threat and a monopoly. TikTok has abused their position many times in many ways, refused to cooperate, and has reached the, "find out" phase.

Hah! That's pretty much exactly what I've said to my (right wing) relatives on a number of occasions but it doesn't work. Does the author not realize that this perspective is very liberal?
Liberals and progressives are the folks with empathy that can't fathom how anyone could vote for Donald Trump; a well-known grifter, actual criminal, tax cheat, and total scumbag who cheated on all of his wives.
I have a ton of empathy yet I still don't understand conservatives. The only thing that makes sense to me is that they're authoritarian and their chosen authority tells them to hate certain people, that any given thing is a conspiracy, and that no government-run program is ever a good thing. But to tell them that to their faces is like telling them that they're stupid and suckers. To them it's incredibly insulting.
Yet when you try to figure out how they (someone who lives off Social Security) came to believe that, "Mexicans are stealing our jobs" it's the only thing that makes sense. They really are suckers. They may have been "smart" at some point in their life but not anymore. They choose how to vote based on anger at imaginary enemies and fake news.
I hope his home gets destroyed by a climate-induced natural disaster.
Republicans are all about the nanny state. Tracking periods, banning books, deciding who gets to have what medications/medical treatments (instead of doctors), trying to control what websites publish, etc.
Never trust any organization with "heritage" in its name.
To make them worse. How else is the Republican party going to grow in the future?
