When corporations do it, it's merely copyright violations.

Perhaps I'm a bit weird, but things like this bother me in ways that nobody else seems to think about:

• The $180,000 is for the entire state. That's nothing. I don't know how many schools Kansas has, but let's say it's 100. That's $1800 per school. Come on.
• Why can't the school just ask some locals to build them some phone lockers? Just put out a school bulletin asking for some volunteers. I'm certain that in the entire state of Kansas they have plenty of companies and locals who would be willing to make the simplest of tiny, metal lockers.

They talk about these complicated technical solutions when all that's necessary is a very thin, very small traditional locker. Make the kids bring their own lock! That's what we did with lockers when I was in high school in the 90s.

Those old school steel lockers were certified for fire resistance, BTW. Not because they went through some special certification process, but because they were steel and painted with school-certified paint (which every school district already has plenty of).

I'm all for it... As long as they get paid as much as their adult peers!

It's a bad idea to get kids socialized, thinking low pay is ever acceptable.

There should also be mandatory training about wage theft and how serious a crime it is for an employer to expect anyone to show up early or stay late without paying for that extra time. Have a great big award ceremony for the kids that reported employers who were caught pulling that shit! Make the employer pay them an amount equivalent to all the lost wages times three.

You want people to have more kids? Have the state give parents tax benefits (or just checks!) for each child's earnings until they're 25 or so.

Of course they're afraid! If you watched/listened to right wing media every day you would be too. That's all they talk about: The other is out to get them. To make their lives harder. To turn their children gay/trans! To steal their jobs! To replace them, the true Americans!

If the world is too complicated for you to understand it sure feels great to hear someone simplify it for you like that. It's not your dumb ass that's causing any problems, it's the others! The ones that aren't like you! They don't even look like you! They come from different places! They have strange and scary traditions and rituals you don't understand! It must be a conspiracy! They're out to take everything away from you!

The world can't be that complicated, right? The Right believes that everything has a simple explanation. That's why they love talking points. Right wing media embraces this to the extreme. A scientist listening to Fox News explain something like CRISPR might just barf; it's that bad. Whereas non-mainstream right wing media wouldn't even try and would instead just make something up like saying, "they're using chemicals to turn the frogs gay."

This is caused by your root controller's limited bandwidth and it's inability to handle that many 3.0 devices at the same time. Some of the newer motherboards with USB C PD have controllers in them that can do a lot more.

It's basically a hack on part of the company that made the root controller IC. They know they only have enough internal bandwidth to support 16 USB 3.0 devices so they intentionally bork things when you plug in more than that since their Transaction Translator (TT) can't handle more and they were too lazy to bother implementing the ability to share 2.0 and 3.0 properly.

I'm guessing the decision went something like this...

"We have enough bandwidth for 16 3.0 devices... What do we do if someone plugs in more than that?" "Only a few people will ever have that many! We don't have the budget to handle every tiny little use case! Just ship it."

So it's not Linux fault in this case. Or at least, if it is (a problem with the driver) it's because of some proprietary bullshit that the driver requires to function properly 🤷
