This comic is absolutely true: The AI companies don't give two shits about getting consent before feeding content into their AI training databases.

But it's also true that they don't need it. They're not redistributing the works, so it doesn't matter (from a copyright perspective).

Courts have already reaffirmed our right to save stuff that gets delivered to our computers over the Internet. If we changed that rule, it would mean the end of the Internet, Lemmy, memes, etc.

AI companies suck—yes—but don't let anger at their behavior convince you that removing everyone's basic rights is a good idea.

Of all the fucking things. Forget all the blatant corruption and illegal behavior of this administration for a moment. This is why Republican administrations are always a bad idea: They put non-experts in roles that require experts!

I'm 48 and every single Republican president in my lifetime has pulled shit like this. From John Tower (first Bush) to the severe incompetency of the George W. Bush administration (e.g. "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job.") to the catastrophic incompetency and corruption of both Trump administrations.

Democratic administrations aren't perfect, but they at least try to appoint actually qualified individuals into any given position. For Republicans, the only qualification necessary seems to be loyalty and/or making friends with the right people (and who knows what back room/hidden dealings).

I used to live down the street from a great big data center. It wasn't a big deal. It's basically just a building full of servers with extra AC units.

Inside? Loud AF (think: Jet engine. Wear hearing protection).

Outside: The hum of lots of industrial air conditioning units. Only marginally louder than a big office building.

A data center this big is going to have a lot more AC units than normal but they'll be spread all around the building. It's not like living next to an airport or busy train tracks (that's like 100x worse).

They really don't understand reporting if they're being like this. Reporters don't need access inside the Pentagon. They can get whatever TF they want through leaks from trusted sources.

By letting the reporters in, they can keep an eye on them and see who they're talking to. That way, when there's a leak that they don't like they can review the logs and have a slightly higher chance of catching the leaker.

Denying credentials to reporters (en mass) is a one-way ticket to chaos.

You work for us (the citizens), assholes! When you perform a public duty in public you don't get privacy!

Either stop being a pussy and be proud of the fact that you're working for actual modern day Nazis or resign. Those are your two options.

You can get your name written down in the history books as someone who willingly worked with Nazis or someone who refused to do so. Your choice!

When you kidnap people without due process on the regular you're encouraging people to fight back. When you send them to foreign gulags known for literally torturing and killing people and forcing them into slave labor you're encouraging them to fight back with deadly force.

Dying—fighting for your life—sure sounds better than just giving up and letting ICE take you away. At this point the Trump Administration and ICE cannot be trusted to execute due process. They're operating outside of the law. They are the lawless ones.

They're hoping for deadly conflict and I fear they're going to get it. Though, on the plus side I'm 100% certain they will be unhappy with the outcome. In both the short and long term.

Where will they go? Gaza was the concentration camp and Isreal's bombs are the ovens.

Think about it: What is socialism? It's collectively funding or working on things via the government. There's many competing definitions but that's basically all there is to it.

Under that definition we're already living under socialism:

• Fire departments
• Police
• Infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc)
• Weather services
• USPS
• The entire military as a construct

With socialism the people get a say in how such things are run. In private institutions they don't. That's the biggest realistic difference.

Either way people are still paying for these things. If they're not really competitive then private industry will fleece the masses because that's what capitalism encourages (see: Healthcare). If there's a robust, competitive market then socialism can fall behind in things like innovation and price.

Whether or not something is funded-and-run by the government is irrelevant. What matters is the value. If government can provide a better value for a dollar than private industry it should. If the people don't like the result they can change it or use a private alternative.

Sure, they'll be paying extra (on top of taxes) for the private alternative but at least it's an option. If the government isn't providing an alternative to private institutions then there's really no option at all. Best anyone can do is vote with their wallet but as we can all see that just doesn't work in certain industries (in fact, entire caregories of need!) and services.
