Also, stuff that gets mis-labeled as AI can be just as dangerous. Especially when you consider that the AI detection might use such labels to train itself. So someone who's face is weirdly symmetrical might get marked as AI and then have hard time applying for jobs, purchasing things, getting credit, etc.

I want to know what counts as AI. If someone uses AI to remove the background in an image or just to remove someone standing in the background is technically generative AI but that's something you can do in any photo editor anyway with a bit of work.

There's like five million ways you can use disk encryption on Linux though and not all of them are very performant. So keep that in mind if you see other benchmarks showing awful performance (use the settings Phoronox used).

I suspect Microsoft made some poor decisions in regards to disk encryption (probably because of bullshit/insecure-by-design FIPS compliance) and now they're stuck with them.

Actually, it's everyone that's going to abuse it. Big tech wants to be the exclusive "AI provider" for everyday people's AI needs and desires but the reality is that the tech isn't that easy to keep secret/proprietary because most of the innovations pushing AI forward come from individuals fooling around with the technology and academia. Not from big tech R&D (which lately seems to all be spent trying to improve business processes).

Big tech is spending billions on hardware and entire data centers just to do AI stuff with the expectation that it'll give them a competitive advantage but the truth is that it'll be the small companies and individuals that end up taking advantage of AI in ways that actually improve things for everyday people and/or make real money.

My guess is that they're betting on acquisitions of companies using their AI processing power 🤷. Either that or it's just wishful thinking.

How is "Business and Financial" not the #1 category? I work in finance and it's so painfully obvious that for every employee that actually does real work on a day-to-day basis there's at least 10 that don't do anything at all. Not even, "this work is not meaningful." I mean, they literally don't do anything; they keep chairs warm and write emails explaining why everything isn't their problem or they stare at every free slot in their calendar every Monday and find ways to micro manage the people that work under them (getting in the way of those people actually doing real work).

I see memes about construction crews where one guy is digging a ditch and there's three other guys hanging back doing nothing and I can't help but think, "that's actually a pretty good ratio!"

Anyone who thinks "big government" is inefficient obviously never worked for a big bank. The regulators assigned to banks are far more on top of things and turn in vastly more real work than 90% of bank employees. In fact, nearly everything in banking and finance is fully automated (when it comes to moving money around, calculating interest, figuring out if someone can get a loan, etc) that at every quarterly shareholder meeting the only ideas that are ever shared in regards to "making more money" are about cutting costs by finding ways to "run leaner" (aka laying more people off).
