Mastodon is a part of the larger “Fediverse,” a network of interconnected servers that communicate using the ActivityPub protocol. This decentralized infrastructure allows users on different Mastodon servers to interact with each other seamlessly.

Mastodon is at risk of falling into the trap that a lot of free/open source software does, where the idea of the software being "free as in speech" is expected to outweigh or explain away deficiencies in its usefulness.

I especially like to blame the complex interplay of 2 different apps, 2 different Fediverse server softwares over 3 instances (spanning several incompletely mapped protocol layers) - solely on the unassuming user, without any further explanation - speaking in riddles rather than speaking frankly. On the Mastodon instance these forwards were meant for (and falsely attributed to the lemmy user with the same local username part) this behaviour would come off as very rude. But thanks for the invitation to learning the details and culture of this service with your kind explanations!

Die Zahl der Twitter-Alternativen wächst und wächst. Während die meisten das Vorbild ziemlich stark nachbauen, gibt es aber auch Versuche, weiterzudenken.

The fediverse decentralizes digital power, promoting user autonomy and privacy. Success of the fediverse hinges on smart decisions by digital advocates and users. User-defined rules and moderation could redefine the online world in the fediverse.

Are you looking for an open-source Reddit alternative? Well, this is something!

Der momentan stattfindende Streik auf Reddit sollte der Politik zu denken geben

I'm having massive troubles with using lemmy.ml since around the time of the update. The website doesn't work at all, #Jerboa crashes on every start, and even in #Lemmur, some operations end in handshake (or other) errors. Furthest point to which I could debug was: When opening https://lemmy.ml and ignoring the erroneous certificate, the browser shows the content of join-lemmy.org This is from using it from Middle Europe, I've seen in another thread that it seems to work from North Americe. Maybe this helps?
