Yeh, it's come as standard on windows for a few years now, right?
I don't ever remember installing it on any windows computers I've used and it's always been there

Is this labour doing an actual labour thing?

[-] towerful@programming.dev 8 points 1 year ago

Having been through university, I have no idea how I could "level up faster" without more years.
And I say that as someone that has carved out a career doing something as the (AFAIK) only person (well, freelancer at least) doing what I do in my country.

Maybe AI disrupts universities? Or AI disrupts skills?
Like AirBnB disrupted hotels, then enshitified to make airbnbs require more manual labour to stay at and cost more than a fucking standard hotel room.

Killing Donny wouldn't change much, tho.
America has shown it wants Donald or a Donald substitute.

Project 2025 is now Americas playbook.

Other countries changing military suppliers isn't going to change back to america for 10-15 years (hell, maybe even longer, I dunno what the service life of a jet platform is).
The risk that has surfaced of "America has an off switch" - even just the potential risk of rumors of an off switch - means all those military assets are useless when America elects unhinged leaders that are willing to subvert democratic process in order to run their playbook.
And America has shown it is willing to do that. Even prefers to do that

Reminds me of the story of the old engineer asked to come in and fix some machine in a factory.

The engineer inspects the machine, marks it with some chalk, then strikes the chalk mark with a hammer.
The machine works again.
The company asks for an itemised invoice after seeing the initial invoice for $10k.
To which they received:

  • hitting chalk mark with hammer: $1.
  • knowing where to place the chalk mark: $9,999

GPT suffers from garbage-in garbage-out just as much as a search engine does.
Knowing how to find search results to fix your specific situation is a skill.
Utilising GPT for such a task is equally a skill. With the added bonus of GPT randomly pulling the perfect API/Library out of its ass

Didn't the kinda do that in Behind The Curve?
They used a long body of water as a flat reference, set up 3 columns with a hole through them at the same height above the water reference.
A torch shone through 1 end should be visible at the other end if all of the holes are on the same plane.
Because of the curvature, they had to lift the last column to be able to see the light.
They didn't manage to explain that one

I always thought Facebook was useful to me. Until one day I decided to stop. A week later I deleted my account.
Turns out Facebook wasn't useful to me.
And I can't see a future where it will be.

WhatsApp is currently useful to me.
And considering EUs current ruling, I imagine there will be WhatsApp compatible apps soon. Besides, if meta leaves the EU, everyone will move to telegram or signal or whatever.

So no, I don't think it will be useful to me one day. And I'd be quite happy to see it go

The low ram and storage are to drive you up 2 tiers.
By the time you go "256gb isn't enough storage, so I'll pay 10% more for something useable", you are pretty much at the stage of "if I'm spending this much, I might as well get the ram upgrade as well". And suddenly you are paying $500 more.

Huh, lots of opinions on BOTW and "if I disable a mechanic on PC, the game is not fun".
I've enjoyed both botw and totk, but not to completion.

I do feel like they are both tech demo iterations.
Botw introducing actual physics and creativity as puzzle solving possibilities. Totk introducing "everything is physics" and relying on creativity for puzzle solving.
Botw story was mid. Totk story was better.
Botw dungeons were terrible. Totk dungeons were better, and some had a bit more girth/depth to them.

I feel like now that they've cracked the "everything is physics", and iterated dungeon designs... The next one will hopefully feel a lot more Zelda.
At least, I hope so.

But, same genre...
What do you class totks genre as?

While i agree, unfortunately these models (hopefully) drive politics.
Politicians will do the minimum they can get away with. Thats both human nature and capitalism.
If the models undershoot (climate change accelerates faster than scientists predict), the world is fucked.
If the models overshoot (panic etc, and it ends up being a nothingburger), people will stop trusting models.
If the models are spot on, action is taken, and everything is fine... Everyone doubts the models and the hype - despite the fact the threat was understood, acted on and fixed, and a catastrophy averted (think y2k)

I think we are pretty fucked, tbh.

When you want to know the name of the operator for a language.
Like "what does & mean in c++?".
& isn't too bad, but some of them can be difficult (like "JavaScript ??").
And if you don't know it's called a reference operator, or a bullish coalescence operator, or whatever... Trying to learn what it does can be downright impossible

Pretty much.
Their whole deal is "fiscal responsibility", which apparently means applying austerity for about a decade and cutting huge amounts of public service budgets.

Mild tinfoil hat
Things like the amazing NHS end up underfunded (and leveraged as a bargaining tool, like when Brexit would give the NHS 350m extra per week). Obviously waiting lists get longer, some people maybe start seeking private care for some things. Then the Tories can turn around and say "the NHS is broken, people are using private care, we should sell off the remaining NHS and do the American thing. Think of the tax cuts!".
/Mild tinfoil hat

They also hate immigrants, want the old Rule Britannia/British Empire thing back, think dealing with climate change is untenable, a whole bunch of fun stuff like that.
