worth mentioning that SMS messages are plaintext as they traverse the carrier network. They are also logged by seemingly any equipment that they traverse. Also when they aren't delivered immediately, they wait in a queue on the network waiting for the receiving device to "phone home" (pun intended ๐Ÿ˜Ž).

The caveat here is often times the plaintext message is in an encrypted tunnel (physical wireless layer, and data tunnels in carrier EPC) but at tunnel endpoints, SMSs are nakey

FYI, you can financially support Rebble and get perks like being able to reply with voice to messages. I don't personally do so but I know people who have had success with it.

For comparison, my Pebble with everything turned off (like health tracking, apps, steps, alarms etc) and only BT on for notifications, I get about a week still

I'd add to this "GMaps WV" (Google maps web view wrapper). It's available on FDroid and wraps the web version of google maps. I use it to find locations and GPS coordinates and then navigate to them in OSM bc OSM based applications are poor and doing so.

very good point! I find myself using ChatGPT more for references and I am also afraid what will happen if there isn't enough "human generated content" to train on. I can picture an edge case a chunk of the internet is AI generated content (with even users at the wheel). The the next wave of AI will train on previous gen AI output

Youre right, The 2 port vaults are $176 which is almost double your budget. I figured you could find a used one for cheaper, but I just looked around and you cannot :(

You can check out ODROID. The ARM version for $83 and a x86 version for $129. You can play around with specs and models and get those numbers down lower. Pretty large community playing with them, BSD probably can support them or at least the info is most likely in a forum somewhere.

There are no platform's rules, guidelines and policies regarding the use of AI-generated content and we would like to weigh the pros and cons.

I wanted to start a discussion about the use of AI-generated solutions on Programming.dev. Personally, I've found that AI-powered tools have been incredibly helpful in solving programming questions. I won't name any specific commercial software, but I use one that combines GPT-4 and web search to get more factual information. I write some answers I think I might revisit to the ShareGPT community, but I would prefer posting programming solutions to this instance. However, I'm not sure if AI-generated solutions are welcomed on programming.dev. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. If AI-generated responses are accepted, how should we format the answers, should we just copy paste without quoting, should we quote the model, just mention that it's AI-generated,...?

It's been a while since I was in a formal classroom setting but as an engineer I'd assert that I'm constantly learning. So I'll offer my perspective on AI in education for those continuing education.

I find myself taking more risks at work and in my personal projects in experimenting with new technology and languages. AI's shortcomings grow exponentially as technical complexities of the prompt grow linearly, but for a beginner getting their feet wet in a subject it lowers the bar considerably in entry to the topic. I found I am not plagued so much by "analysis paralysis" after reading blogs and tutorials that are written by authors with varied understanding in the subject. With a few prompts I can effectively "filter down" the topics I need to read more about to produce something useful. No more fear that "what if i missed something."

Then there's the aspect of creating a tailored refresher for yourself on a class of "Stuff you have to relearn every time you have to use it" (love that comment). Or asking an AI to explain what a piece of content means. For example, if you wrote a really complex Makefile, dumping a tree of the repository and asking the AI to expand all the variables in the Makefile, I can now read what every step is doing.

But you definitely hit the nail on the head with pointing that "it opens a door to potential misuse". I become dependent on it for doing some tasks that I will only otherwise learn by doing. And in the context of data storage, in some ways I become less efficient and more error prone because I no longer access the knowledge I have cached in memory (my brain) and instead access data on disk (taking the time to ask an AI) that can retrieve incorrect data (data corruption, bad sectors, etc) that are difficult to catch.

As an educational tool, I think those that behave as "AI gluttons" and overindulge in use of AI to the point of excess or greed, risk eroding their critical thinking and creativity. And those that do not supplement their learning with AI risk of being left behind by those who use it responsibly. In the same way I think AI will not replace programmers, but programmers that use AI will replace programmers that don't.

Very informative, thanks for sharing.

The author is definitely qualified to speak on XMPP and ActivityPub but one thing I noticed is all protocols and technologies mentioned really had no other alternatives for communication. Users flocked because there was nowhere else to go.

Imagine Lemmy.world was owned by Meta and today decided to federate only with those who paid it.

It is in the power of users to host their content on instances that will not turn on them - which unfortunately means not holding discourse on monitized instances
