But calling the fact that time passed and we will reach another equinox at some point is like saying that "progression of time towards 5:43 pm" is a thing just because time always tends towards 5:43 and once we pass it, we use the next 5:43 as a target.

I develop calendar systems in my spare time and you should take a look at the leap year rule of SAC13, it takes the precession of the equinoxes into account.

The things you just said are just words thrown together - and again - just because you can't admit that you heard precession of the equinoxes in the past and misremembered it.

You can't just make stuff up and then say "it's just a description". It looks like you just remembered precession of the equinoxes wrong and doubled down once somebody called you out on it?

If it's a description of something, what does "progression of the equinoxes" describe? Astronomically it's complete gibberish, so I'm not sure what it's describing.

Desktop is a form factor not "software" and there are microwaves and refrigerators with "PC hardware" (in quotes, because it's actually a pretty ill-defined term), but they still are not "Desktops" even is you install Fedora on your fridge.

The names are pretty clear and are about form factor. Desktop is something on top of a desk. Laptop is something on top of your lap. Hand-held is something you hold in your hand.

The steam deck is a hand-held game console - doesn't matter what OS is it uses. It's true that most stat tracking sites count it as "desktop" but not because it's a desktop computer but because the user agent looks similar to desktop user agents.

If I install Android on a tower PC it doesn't randomly become a smartphone even though all browser trackers would register it as a smartphone.

And Valve using a "typical desktop OS" on their handheld console doesn't magically turn it into a desktop PC.

So your definition for "desktop" is if it's an x86 compatible architecture? Seems pretty random to me. Btw, there are x86 android device. IMO a desktop is something on the top of a desk to do typical "office work". PCs, Macs, Laptops, etc. but calling a SteamDeck game console "Desktop" is pretty dishonest I think.

The underlying chips certainly are exact powers of two but the drive size you get as a consumer is practically never an exact power of two, that's why it doesn't really make sense to divide by 1024.

The size you provided would be 500107862016 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 465.76174163818359375 GiB

Divided by 1000³ it would be 500.107862016 GB, so both numbers are not "pretty" and would've to be rounded. That's why there is no benefit in using 1024 for storage devices, even SSDs.

The situation is a bit different with RAM. 16 "gig" modules are exactly 17179869184 bytes. https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=prime+factors+of+17179869184

So you could say 17.179869184 GB or 16 GiB. Note that those 16 GiB are not rounded and the exact number of bytes for that RAM module. So for memory like caches, RAM, etc. it definitely makes sense to use binary prefixes with 1024 conversion but for storage devices it wouldn't make a difference because you'd have to round anyway.
