America has decided to roll over and let fascism take root.

Our ancestors would be utterly ashamed.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 42 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm more concerned with what our descendents are going to think.

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 15 points 2 days ago

They won’t think much of anything, considering what Trump is about to do to the Department of Education.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Just be glad most of us won't be around anymore to find out

You mean the slave owners who only wanted white landowners to vote?

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mine were the ones fleeing Italian fascism who thought this would be better.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mine came here fleeing persecution during the German revolutions in 1848.

Is there a way to save a comment so it alerts me back to it 4 years from now?

[–] slampisko@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Make a Google calendar event with a permalink to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, but it requires learning. You may not have that option soon with what Republicans ran on doing to our education system.

[–] OceanSoap@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tbf, learning has taken a nose dive while under the Department of ED. It's.... Really, really bad.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you believe education should be privatized so that only the privileged receive one?

[–] OceanSoap@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, but to pretend the choices are one or the other is ridiculous.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, if you don't want education to be privatized then you want it to be universal (federalized).

If there's some in between, what exactly is it?

You should do some research into what American education looked like before the Department of Education.

Spoiler Alert: It wasn't very good and a lot of people couldn't read.

States can and did run their own school system, and I'm sorry to spoil your spoil, but lots of kids churning out of the system today can't read. The numbers are staggering.

States can and did run their own school system

Yes, poorly. With no guarantee that their student's Constitutional rights were being respected.

and I’m sorry to spoil your spoil, but lots of kids churning out of the system today can’t read.

Again, you need to do your homework.

In 1870 11.5% of whites were illiterate and a staggering 80% of blacks and other minorities were illiterate. By 1979 only .04% of whites and 1.6% of blacks and other minorities were illiterate. Generally speaking, from 1870 to 2003 the overall literacy rate went from 80% to 99%.

A federalized educational system is one of the best things to ever happen to this country, or any country.
