Yip! There are various types, but I have one that works in a similar way to this: https://www.briscoes.co.nz/product/1044163/zip-ice-cream-maker/
There is a bowl with thick walls, with the walls filled with some special liquid like the kind of ice packs you might put in your chilly bin. You put this in the freezer for a couple of days to get really frozen, and you mix up an ice cream mix. I have a recipe I like that has egg yolks, cream, milk, sugar, flavour and you carefully cook it, then I normally put it in the fridge at least overnight so it starts out cold.
You then take the special bowl out of the freezer, and attach the motorised part and turn it on, then pour in the mixture. It has plastic blades that go around the sides of the bowl scraping off the mixture as it freezes against the sides of the frozen bowl, keeping the mixture constantly moving. You let it run about 20 mins, and it becomes a thick but still runny mixture, then you scoop it into a container and put it in the freezer to finish off freezing.
It's a bit of work and definitely doesn't save any money over store bought, but things taste better when you made them yourself 😆
That does sound like a rigmarole but hey, icecream is awesome!
Also you can try some of those weird vintage icecream flavours like cucumber and parmesan.
Ha! Take that, people who say jam and cheese, honey and cheese, banana and cheese, etc are weird. Parmesan ice cream is more proof cheese goes with anything!
I love that ice cream invention and how similar it is to what I use today. It's basically the same design except for some innovation in the freezing bowl and adding a motor!
Yeah when looking for the article (I only knew the flavours part) I was quite surprised by how similar it sounds!
Let me know how your banana and cheese icecream turns out.
I was thinking of sandwiches but I'd be willing to try this... I'll try to remember next time I make ice cream. "Banana and cheese ice cream" sounds weird by "Banana and parmesan ice cream" sounds fancy!
