Piefed admin here, afaik there's no way to make emails optional on our side. Closest thing we can do is make verifying them not necessary.

So I should be able to just enter email@example.com as my email address? How can I tell whether or not a given instance requires verification?

Yes, you can use an email address like that, if someone else hasn't already.

There is no way to tell. I don't want to make it easier for spammers & trolls to find instances that are easy targets.

On instances that require verification you can use a disposable email address generator site but admins will get a warning about that next to your application (if they are doing applications). If they trust you for some other reason then you'll be approved anyway.
