The hate this genre attracted was otherworldy. Perfect storm of heteronormatism, anti-LGBT, racism and rockism.

With respect to Hiphop and Rap, I was a HipHop fan for years and I still don't get the difference. Best explanation I could offer is that Hiphop isn't just Rap, but also dancing, graffiti and DJing (especially the turntablism variety), plus Hiphop music without rapping.
