I was halfway through composing a recommendation for The Expanse in my head before I even finished reading your comment. It's really top tier.

Dresden Files isn't quite fantasy, but it isn't quite anything else either, and I think a story that involves wizards and vampires and faeries can be considered fantasy even if it does take place in the mid 2000's. Very highly recommend. I read it for the first time about two years ago and was immediately upset that I didn't read it way earlier, it very rapidly became one of my favorite book series I've ever experienced.
