I've always wondered in those gray, dystopian movies with smog filled skies, smoke stacks, military forces, and people behind fences: how could they let it get that far?

I never even considered how quickly it could happen.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 15 points 7 months ago

Same here. In just 10 years the world went to hell in ways I could not see possible.

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 11 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

The rest of the world has been watching you walk blindly down this path for three or four decades. We warned you, repeatedly, and received shitty, belligerent flag-waving in response.

Nobody literate outside the US is at all surprised by where you have found yourself (though we are a little shocked by how easily the decent people among you are rolling over and taking it). Trump is perhaps not the LEAST of your problems, but he’s not the cause, either.

[-] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Anyone paying attention since at least the Bush-Gore election would know we were fucked.

[-] jumjummy@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Chances are that whatever country you are from also has an alt-right problem. Seeing the .ca instance, if you are from Canada, you weren’t far from electing your own lite version of Trump. Thankfully our mistake amplified so much bullshit that the Canadian’s didn’t repeat what we did.

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yes, we have an alt-right problem thanks to you allowing a house fire to start on our street after three decades of responding like assholes when we told you not to let your kids play with matches.

“Your child’s going to start a fire and it’s going to spread.”

“Shut up, you’re America’s hat.”

America is burning itself down right now and your response is "well there's smoke in Canada!"

[-] jumjummy@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

My response was that this is becoming a global problem, and all the smug “I’ve been saying it for 30 years” bullshit is just dumb. Perhaps with all that precognition they should have retired by now with their foreknowledge of the global markets.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 0 points 7 months ago

I know, it's always the same responses from Americans:

  1. Everywhere else is bad too!
American exceptionalism never dies - even when the country goes to shit that just means they're going to shit better and faster than everyone else.
Deflection - vague statements about other countries having an a right wing is irrelevant to how shitty America has become.
Defeatism - "this is a global problem". No, it's not. There are many countries that haven't turned their leaders into Kings with nothing to check their power or prevent them from chasing their every whim. You mentioned Canada, Canada has not invaded a sovereign nation and kidnapped its leader. Canada is not insisting it needs to Annex an allied nation. South Korea is actually holding a political leader accountable for trying to have a coup and taking them to trial. We should just change the logo of America from "Land of the Free" to "Nothing can be done to stop this."

  2. Why haven't you / Aren't you doing something to stop this?
See above - "Nothing can be done to stop this" / "Can't somebody else to this for us?" Anything to avoid dealing with the actual shitshow they are living in themselves.

FFS, a leader of a supposedly democratic country has invaded another country, is openly talking about annexing another, openly stating human life has no value, and your response to that is "but but Canada has a Conservative party that lost their last election!"

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 3 points 7 months ago

I grew up in the Middle East and immigrated to Canada. The problems of the US were not 100% obvious to me from there.

[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago

god you anti-american losers are so fucking annoying. You are not unique and neither are your countries. They do all the same shit as America. It's just popular to hate on Americans lmfao. Like can you stop being a fucking loser for just a second? Why are you belittling this person you know nothing about? Because they're American? They're literally on your side.

Fuck America. Fuck an unfathomably large percentage of Americans. But to just lay into someone with some "told you so" smug attitude like your own shit doesn't stink? Shut the fuck up and do something useful, you useless ineffective twat. Christ.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago

Shut the fuck up and do something useful, you useless ineffective twat. Christ.

  • Someone who claims to be "on your side" and doesn't understand why someone would have an anti-American attitude.
[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago

Lmao yeah keep justifying your hatred for civilians in another country because of their government. Really works out for everyone involved. Cunt.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 months ago

Not what I said at all. I explained my dislike of you because of how you behave.

[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago

Oh, sorry, little baby doesn't like me because I yell at xenophobes for being xenophobic?

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Told you so.

Also, love how American liberals start sounding like MAGA the moment they get told their good intentions accomplish fuck all on their own.

Any American who is surprised by what’s happening, I assure you, is not on “my side,” they’re low-information, intellectually lazy idiots who never bothered to pay attention until white people were in danger.

[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Tell me more about how I sound like maga because I called you a useless, ineffective twat for belittling people. Tell me more about how I sound like maga because I'm calling you out for being a xenophobe.

Go on. Read my comment again. Tell me about how maga I sound.

"Low-information, intellectually lazy idiots" that's a lot of educated elitism for someone who claims to be further left than a liberal. Sounds to me like you're an elitist snob.

Fuck off and die.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 months ago

Fuck off and die.

"I just don't understand where this Anti-American attitude comes from!"

[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yeah, because it's such an uniquely American thing. You're so right, man. You're not putting forth the laziest argument imaginable.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 0 points 7 months ago

Your behavior is neither common nor normal.

[-] AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

You're running defense for xenophobia and pretending like I am particularly problematic because I called out xenophobia.
