Schumer literally cannot take action on impeachment. He's a Senator, impeachment starts in the House.

Talk to Mike Johnson if you want to get impeachment rolling. LOL. Good luck with that!

[-] themaninblack@lemmy.world 28 points 5 months ago

A senator, and minority leader, is more than a dude who complains and votes whenever they can, and occasionally calls the president an unhinged asshole on social media.

Homie could walk from skyscraper to skyscraper in NYC calling out CEOs individually and gather an insane crowd behind him doing so.

Make a spectacle, get attention, start trouble. There is a genocide and a war on. Paint “impeach” on your chest and start running around the Lincoln memorial, lol. He can do shit, obviously, because he has a huge pulpit.

But he won’t. And he doesn’t deserve this defence simply because he doesn’t have the votes.

Yup. A human turtle ground Obama’s ambitions to dust as Senate minority leader. They are definitely capable of more than they’re doing.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

It's not a matter of not having the votes, he literally has no official role in impeachment until the House passes it first.

He could say "Yes, lets impeach the fucker!" but it has no more weight than you or I saying it until the House passes it first.

[-] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 months ago

Of course it has more weight! He's Chuck Schumer. He could go on a bunch of news shows and say it. He has a platform. Politics isn't just about voting and procedures. It's about influence, persuasion and inspiration.

If you haven't noticed, you're talking to a zionist.

Me: "Israel is committing all 5 definitions of genocide, has been doing war crimes for decades, and needs to be subject to tribunals in the Hague."

Lemmings: "But you won't let me say we should exterminate the Jews! You're a Zionist!"

😂

Hakeem Jeffries is House Minority leader, not Schumer.

[-] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

I think you greatly overestimate what that power actually is. Most Americans know Sanders and AOC better than Schumer. Even if he has the name recognition and respect that some of the other party celebrities have, it would still be shouting into a void.

Being vocal isn't going to cause Mike Johnson to suddenly put articles of impeachment up for a vote and there are not enough Republicans in the house that would force the issue.

[-] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

The dems run their party from the inside. As the eldest crypt keeper Schumer has control of a cadre of dem reps who will vote for whatever he tells them to. He has enough of them that he can often single handily win or sabotage (mostly what he does) whatever the democrat party is doing.

Schumer's political platform is Israel First so he and Trump have been getting along swimmingly this term. That is why he won't use his leverage to get impeachment votes.

[-] Blackout@fedia.io 14 points 5 months ago

If Schumer had the power he still wouldn't cause that's who he is. A coward that doesn't rise to the occasion, that says some serious words to the press then goes to his club to forget. He is definitely in the democratic party tho, that's about all I can say to his accomplishments.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

OK as a non American I'll take your word for that. But he still could have stated that if it reached the Senate, the Democrats would support it.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world -3 points 5 months ago

Well of course the Democrats are going to support it, just like they supported it the last two times Trump was impeached.

Coming from the opposition, that doesn't mean much, like when the Republicans impeached Clinton over a blow job.

[-] mcv@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 months ago

I don't think Johnson has to start it, does he? I think any member can initiate it, and if a couple of Republicans vote with the Democrats, that should be enough to make it pass. Unless he shuts down the House, of course.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Any member can initiate it, and in fact already have, but it's up to Johnson to bring it to a vote which he will never do.

So far, the only House members bringing impeachment articles are Democrats and Democrats do not have the ability to force votes in the House because it's currently Republican controlled.

That COULD change in November, but the new House won't get seated until January, 2027. That will be the soonest we could see impeachment voted on.

But none of that matters unless the Senate flips as well, we need a 60 vote majority in the Senate to overcome the filibuster and a 67 vote majority to convict and remove Trump, the Democrats aren't even CLOSE to that.

[-] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Even if impeachment made it through the House, I doubt the Senate would hold him accountable.

I'd also argue that most establishment Dems don't actually support impeachment. They view it as divisive.

Personally, I'd want to divide myself from naked fascism…
