Psychosis: an introduction
Psychosis is the combination of delusions and hallucinations. Mine lasted a full year, for two reasons.
First, I didn’t know the symptoms, so I believed in it completely. T, on the other hand, knew them. When he went into psychosis, he couldn’t help believing his delusions, but he still knew he was delusional. A bit like OCD: the sane part of the mind watches helplessly as the other part goes off the rails. T always ended up in the psych ward pretty fast.
The other reason had to do with the nature of my delusion. I thought the cops wanted to recruit me, then punish me. During a conversation with my late father, I told him: “listen, there are 30 cops listening to us right now and cracking up.” Him: “what?” Me: “nothing”: I had “understood” there was some kind of tacit contract and that I wasn’t supposed to say anything. So I kept everything to myself.
