It is, I don't know how he stayed calm enough to get that focus on the eyes of his attacker.
And yet...

Probably pulled focus as the dickhole was getting ready to spray, did a burst shot, and picked the best out of the group
Can you burst shot with flash on modern cameras? Honest question, I don't professional photography
I've got a bottom-of-professional level Sony flash that can strobe up to 10 times a second for 4 seconds.
I can only imagine that would be like a diet flashbang at close range, so I hope he did indeed burst
Yes, but don't do that for portrait photography if you want to keep your job.

It's expected nowadays for mirrorless pro cameras to recognize eyes and autofocus on them.
