they should just smile and ask me how my day is. don't be personal.

As a European, asking how I'm doing is already too far. It was quite confusing when I went to the US.

if you say anything other than 'good, great, swell' we think you're mentally ill and we hate you.

once you learn this, and just say 'good!' it's as if they never asked and you never replied at all.

Oh sure, I had no trouble answering to this after a couple instances. But the first times I was very surprised! I thought the cashier was flirting with me haha. After that I answered "very good, thanks" and basta.
