It's called prosthetics, wigs and make up. He's playing a character who is old and ugly.
This is real Tom as of last year:
He's been in movies before where he was almost unrecognizable due to the make up transformation. This is him in Tropic Thunder:

NGL He was amazing in Tropic Thunder and this trailer makes him look even more amazing as an actor. Prolly gonna be his best role IMO. F Scientology tho.

Sooo. What your are saying is, L. Ron was right and OT Cruise doesn't age? I should join Scientology then, give them all my money and then earn them some more with my cheap labour, while being mobbed into submission?
Or not: Beghe about Scientology and his exit. He was a poster boy for them like Tom Cruise still is.
E: I'm sorry. I get what you're saying about movie props. And I don't want to attack you personally. It is just my disdain for people like Tom Cruise. He is in fact a very good actor. But he a person who works for Scientology while fully knowing what they are or ignoring it.
No worries. I despise him too and one of my favourite cinema factoids of all time is that Christian Bale used Tom Cruise as inspiration for Patrick Bateman. 🤌
And while I consider Tom Cruise to be a creepy psycho, I do also admire his performances in several movies. He's a total freak, but he has what it takes in showbiz. Still think his performance in Magnolia is one of the best ones he ever did.
But yeah. Is what it is. I wanted to give the make up team their flowers because even I looked at this poster and a couple of shots from Digger and went "wtf happened?"

Make-up team: Yes.
Much better than... Let's say in For All Mankind. Just a comparison of the absolute quality of it. I suppose they still do a good job with the means they have.
