I have no idea how most of this works never looked into it. I just hopped over from reddit to kill some of my down time. But a brief breakdown would be appreciated.
Just think about it like reddit and email had a baby:

On Lemmy, each comment, post, user, and community gets its own unique "email address". When you share something, you tell everybody this email address. The instance someone is using when they click the address is smart enough to find and open all the posts/comments/etc associated with that address.
If you share it as a normal link, it's like forcing a Gmail user to switch to Hotmail just to open the one email. They might not have a Hotmail account, so they can't respond or interact with it without going back to Gmail first.
I'm no expert, but I know a bit from experience. For starters, Lemmy isn't one single platform, it is made up of many different instances. Instances are the domains used to access content in the fediverse (lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, etc) using Lemmy. Each instance is separate, owned and run by different people or groups (the admins). As a user of an instance, we view and interact with content exclusively through the instance we're signed into, so a URL like the one you posted is useful information, but forces a user not on that instance to modify it to make it usable on their own. The developers of Lemmy helpfully created the shortcut I used (adding a ! in front of the community) that any user can click and be sent to the given community through their current instance.
