Beyond dumb. I had communicated with adults even in their 50s when I was 13, and never did anything happened, besides sharing love for making mods for games? Like, the better solution is education on online interactions.
Plus, this makes it easier for preds to find victims anyway.
As a general rule, politicians who approve age gates and the people lobbying for it don't do it because of the children, but because they want mass surveillance. Granted, some politicians and lobbyists who genuinely care about children (if you can find any) are also just duped.

German politicians are already sending the police home to people who insult them on forums and social media, including (temporary, but often for an extremely long time) confiscation of devices that may have been used for the "crime". And that's in a country that doesn't literally have masked government goons on the street that regularly abduct, injure and murder the law-abiding population (yet) like the US.
Because their corporate donors want regular workers to be afraid and not get any ideas about redistributing wealth, unionizing, etc
