Beyond dumb. I had communicated with adults even in their 50s when I was 13, and never did anything happened, besides sharing love for making mods for games? Like, the better solution is education on online interactions.

Plus, this makes it easier for preds to find victims anyway.

As a general rule, politicians who approve age gates and the people lobbying for it don't do it because of the children, but because they want mass surveillance. Granted, some politicians and lobbyists who genuinely care about children (if you can find any) are also just duped.

So who is going to come out and update the operating system in every smart tv, every web-connected fridge, Internet routers in every school and home, the obsolete consoles (Nintendo 64, PS2) that were passed down from the neighbour’s kids?

That's the thing, though. This is the best governor this state has had in modern history. Pritzker has been on the money when it comes to almost everything. No idea how he missed the mark so badly here.

I just left Illinois but what he's done to keep abortion rights safe was pretty amazing. Not a fan of his stance on this or guns though. Everything else has been miles better than any recent governor though.

Look, it makes sense. If you're trying to convince a child on the internet to send you pictures or have sex with you, you want to know they're really a kid and not some FBI agent pretending. Having operating systems that report users ages and having a way for anyone to see that reported age for everyone online is a good practice.

The bill only covers operating systems which integrate with cloud services. The bill is designed to target what it calls "addictive" feeds and services. Linux distros don't appear to be in scope. Yet again cm0002 is demonstrating an inability to read the actual sources.

Illinois isn't the first state to try this model. Colorado's SB26-051 and California's AB-1043 both rely on the same OS-level age signal setup; apps request it, and the device answers.

Both of these started off without any concessions for open source platforms (e.g., Linux).

Colorado's SB26-051 originally applied to every operating system and developer without exception. System76 founder Carl Richell worked directly with state lawmakers to change that.

The bill picked up language exempting operating systems and developers distributing software under terms that let anyone copy, redistribute, and modify it freely. It also added a clause blocking platforms from locking down modified versions.

California's AB-1043 had the same gap. Assembly Member Buffy Wicks, the same lawmaker who wrote AB-1043, introduced AB-1856 to fix it. After several rounds of edits, the amended bill redefines "operating system provider" to exclude anyone distributing software under those same open license terms.

Illinois has none of this. HB5511's definitions for "covered manufacturer" and "application store" stay just as broad as these bills were before their amendments.
