I am revisiting Medievil II for the PS1 and going through it, but I really recall not having liked the sequel. I was okay with the story, which did make comprehensible sense given the time going forward, someone ending up with the pages of Zarok's spellbook and all. It's just a rehash of the first game, just time going forward.

Some of the bosses you got to fight were okay, but a lot of them weren't memorable. It was cool to fight Jack the Ripper in that game and they made him creepy as hell. The levels were annoying and were poorly planned. Winston the Ghost was like Navi to me in that game, but only more bearable because you can skip his ass a lot of the time.

The weapons aren't that fun to use, only glad they kept the crossbows and a sword, I guess. The cane you get is arguably the worst of them. The characters introduced were forgettable. I mean, I'm finding more setbacks with the sequel than there is to like and I'm struggling.

The original game was more fun with its dark gothic fantasy setting, you went off to some area to get your upgrades and you met characters whose weapons they specialized in which was cool. The talking gargoyle heads had wit to them and I always talked to them wherever they were, loved the voice acting.

The first game was remade twice probably for good reason. Although I probably would have wished that the sequel would've been given a remake of its own, just to see what would be taken out and what it'd be replaced with. It probably would've been better in that exchange.

Fallout 4. Fallout was finished. We did it. Nv was a doctoral thesis on everything 'fallout' was or had to say. Even the dlc path literally ended with either 'you can't take the gold with you' and walking away from this beautiful fucked up hauntological horror ruin made out of misguided obsessive love or just nuking shit again and starting from nothing.

My issues with 4 stemmed from the base crafting and defense systems. It felt like trend chasing at a time when every game had to have crafting. I’d be out exploring some cool area of the wasteland when suddenly my radio is blowing up asking me to come home and fend off raiders. Nah, I’m good.

I can see value in a Fallout 4 set a couple hundred years after Fallout 3. Fallout 4's civilization is still too broken. Add a few hundred years, and you could get an established civilization out of it, like the NCR of NV.

Funnily enough, that was one of the major complaints fans made about Fallout 3. For some unfathomable reason Bethesda decided to set it generations after the first two games, yet the Wasteland hadn't changed at all despite it now being centuries since the bombs fell.

Come to think of it, they did the exact same thing with Skyrim.

Microsoft and Bethesda are creatively incompetent. They don't really want to say anything. They just want a funny theme park full of kitschy shit so they can pander to fans.

They're fucking soulless morons.

The first fallout was interesting because it was pretty fresh. The 2nd was a bigger exploration, with some interesting questions about remnants. I don't really remember 3 but it had some weird narrative problems, I think.

New Vegas actually asked a new interesting question: who rebuilds after?

And then 4 just shits the bed because Bethesda has no soul. It's also mechanically a mess. Power armor in the intro, except it sucks? Fuck everyone who thought that was a good idea.

To be fair though, it's only been within the past two hundred years that we've seen progress like this. Before that, there really were generations between significant advances.

I'm not sure how well that comparison holds, though, when there's fragments of tech everywhere for survivors to tinker around with

While I would argue that that's untrue - societies have had huge shifts over for atleast 4000 years - we're not neccesarily talking about big societal changes here.

The people in Fallout 4 STILL live in completely wrecked houses. Holes in the ceiling, shattered windows, debris on the floor. Are you telling me no one has cleaned up here in over 200 years?

Are you telling me no one has cleaned up here in over 200 years?

Can't argue with that. There's no excuse for leaving all these 200 year old scraps of paper all over the floor.

Why keep making 'fallout'. Its done.

[–] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Well, maybe not now, considering how corporate it's become. But in the period of 2010 and 2015, you could make a decent sequel. The 23rd century era of Fallout is pretty much creatively bankrupt, but Fallout in the 25th century is workable. What Fallout is missing is the rebuilding of society. The NCR side of things in NV comes close, but it's clear they still have a ways to go to achieve pre-War levels of society. Where's the NCR variant of Nuka Cola, for instance? Or industry for making all those bullets the NCR uses (Pitt doesn't count)? Or the logistics for large scale transport, like trains?

Oh my god just make a new fucking game dude. You can make new IP. I fucking promise. Those questions were adequately explored in fucking fallout 2 and nv. That's not interesting for a fucking game.
