The official turnout for Thursday's by-election was 44.37 per cent, which is higher than some by-elections, but lower than in Andy Burnham's Makerfield, where the turnout was about 58 per cent

I’m used to 90% turnout in Australia with compulsory voting. This feels so ridiculously low.

He instead competed against an odd assortment of 33 other candidates, including 20 independents and several candidates from the Monster Raving Loony Party, setting a UK record.
