And that's it. Self-hosted and open source software is a double-edged sword. Developers have the freedom to build and share whatever they'd like, but that same freedom also allows them to make unpopular decisions No, you are not entitled to anything from software you haven't paid for.

Yet another nugget of truth. Muh boy be ringin' the school bell.

Alas, I see not much of interest this week.

I’m not a big fan of this sort of pseudo-philosophical contrarian fence-sitting.

I mean sure, he’s not technically wrong, but it also implies that while Developers have the freedom to perform these rug-pulls (they do), the author simultaneously wags their finger at the people who have equal freedom to react the way they have.

Developers (companies) are not entitled to be free from criticism or backlash for acting shitty.

If I write some software and put it on my GitHub then you come along and install it, that does not mean we now have a contract the binds us.

[-] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Cool, nobody said you did.

Similarly, there’s no binding contract that says when you remove features from your software’s community edition in order to drive more profits without any added value, that I’m disallowed from criticizing you for it.

The users will have to deal with the loss of features, and you will just have to deal with the criticism.

What do you think the license is, exactly?

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That’s just saying what you can do with the code. It doesn’t mean I owe you anything.

What did you think it meant?

[-] paperd@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 week ago

It depends on what the license says, who owes who.

contrarian fence-sitting

I view it as living in reality.

Developers (companies) are not entitled to be free from criticism or backlash for acting shitty.

I didn't take it as such. Sure, criticize and backlash all you need to feel comfortable again, but at the end of the day, open source dev teams pretty much chart their own course. That also applies the the entire kingdom of software, hardware, etc. Yes, they may lose customers or users, but it's still their lump of clay to mold as they see fit. If they go tits up because of said rug pulls, then they go tits up. Life will continue and other options will be chosen.

[-] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Hmm seems everyone is living in the same reality as you though, so your comment has no substance or meaning other than some weird self-enlightened moral grandstanding.

This type of pseudo-intellectual bullshit is the exact type of thing I’m talking about lol

People are absolutely justified and allowed to criticize the greed of this company. Part of living in objective reality is that you reap what you sow. Everything you just said is not really relevant to that simple fact.

weird self-enlightened moral grandstanding.

No, no moral high ground or grandstanding...just reality

People are absolutely justified and allowed to criticize the greed of this company.

Perhaps you missed the part where I said to criticize and backlash all you so desire until it makes you feel better. What I'm pointing out is that, at the end of the day, it's not your lump of clay to mold even if you disagree with the way it's being molded.

objective reality is that you reap what you sow.

Did you actually read my comment? Here let me paste the relevant part for this: If they go tits up because of said rug pulls, then they go tits up. Life will continue and other options will be chosen.

So if they reap what they sow and they go tits up because they are a shitty acting company and do all sorts of things to piss you and their customers off, then they go tits up. How much more clear could I be? You are merely a user of their software. You have no other stake in the company. All you can do is voice your opinion loudly, but at the end of the day, that's all you have and if they choose to ignore your opinion, your bellyaching serves no purpose other than being an ax to grind on your enshitification stone.

No, no moral high ground or grandstanding...just reality

No it’s 100% grandstanding, sorry. Thats the reality, if you’d care to join me in it.

What I'm pointing out is that, at the end of the day, it's not your lump of clay to mold even if you disagree with the way it's being molded.

This is not insight. You’re using so many words to say nothing of any substance. The fact that you’re saying this in response to the backlash is an implication that this is a reason people shouldn’t complain. If that’s not what you meant, you’d wouldn’t have said anything at all.

Yes, back to enjoying your Reddit moderating

Once again, let me quote the relevant part:

It’s a headache I will never engage in again.

Tell it to your Discord kitten

[-] irmadlad@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I've never had a Discord account. And just to quell any other mud you're slinging, the only two social media accounts I've ever had in 71 years was Reddit and now Lemmy.
