Question: what's the big advantage of using these over your devit card or cash?
Only advantage i can think is losing your wallet with all your cards inside and cash. Otherwise I agree with you there isnt a whole lot of differences
Conversely you can also get locked out of your Google account and lose access to your Google Wallet and everything else it encompasses.
